Box Score 2 DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Senior Breanna Smith (San Antonio, Texas) spun a two-hit, complete game victory to lead the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team past the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers, 4-1, on the final day of the Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic at Haines and Carolyn Hill Stadium in Dahlonega, Ga. on Sunday afternoon. The Javelinas suffered a 2-1 loss to the No. 7 North Georgia Nighthawks in their second game of the day.
TAMUK vs. Wisconsin-Parkside
The Javelina lineup started the day by immediately providing Smith with run support, pushing across a run in the top of the first on two singles and a groundout, which scored junior Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas). A second run came an inning later when sophomore Matisen Onofrei (Mesa, Ariz.) walked, stole second, took third on an error and scored on a single by sophomore Makenzie Mays (Conroe, Texas).
Another walk started the top of the third, this one to Kelly and she proceed to steal second, then moved to third when sophomore Jory Cervantes (Pflugerville, Texas) slapped a single through the middle. Sophmore Jackie De Los Santos (Kingsville, Texas) and she sent the second hit of the frame through the left side to tally Kelly. Cervantes scored one batter later on a double play.
The Rangers did get a run off Smith in the fourth, but that was all TAMUK's southpaw would allow. Smith had to deal with runners on in five of her seven innings, but only one made it as far as third base. Smith walked only two and struck out a pair while collecting her sixth win, which she finished by retiring the side in order in the seventh.
TAMUK vs. North Georgia
Both pitchers were on their game in TAMUK's second game of the day, which pitted sophomore Saidi Castillo (Kingsville, Texas) against UNG's Kylee Smith and both hurlers went the distance in what turned into an extra inning affair.
The Nighthawks put the game's first run in the second but four scoreless innings followed. Smith would finish with a line that included seven hits allowed, but she didn't walk a batter while striking out five. Castillo gave up nine hits, but only one went for extra bases and she also struck out five.
It wasn't until the seventh inning that the Javelinas got to Smith and found a way to tie the game. Freshman Natalie Rodriguez (Edinburg, Texas) laced a one-out double into left and sophomore Matisen Onofrei (Mesa, Ariz.) followed with a two-bagger of her own, brining in pinch-runner Anika Barbosa (Uvalde, Texas) with the tying run. Smith, however, stopped the rally there, setting down the next two batters to strand the winning run at second.
Both teams failed to score in the eighth, but a solo homer by Cheyanne Mosteller put UNG back ahead. Smith refused to allow another comeback, throwing a perfect bottom of the ninth.
The Javelinas will now return to Kingsville for their second home series of the season, a three-game set against Angelo State that will start with a doubleheader at Hubert Field on Friday.
