PUEBLO, Colo. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program wrapped up the weekend road trip to Colorado on Sunday with a 7-0 win over CSU-Pueblo a the Pueblo Tennis Park in the South Central Regional matchup.
"Today was all about bouncing back and regaining confidence," said head coach
Autumn Wollenzien. "We played very focused."
The Javelinas (3-2) were one matchup short of the clean sweep of the Thunderwolves (0-3) but never dropped a set in singles play to take the win.
TAMUK captured the doubles point quickly as senior
Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) and junior
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) started the run with a 6-1 win over Sarah Megilligan and Roma Cordova in the third pairing. Meanwhile, senior
Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and sophomore
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) turned in an identical 6-1 score in the second matchup against Emily Sproston and Katherine Ambrose to secure the doubles point.
The top pairing in the opening portion of the matchup went down to the wire as Kali Hamilton and Tilly Blasdale held on for the 7-6 win after the supertiebreaker went in their favor against freshman
Franka Sindicic (Zagreb, Croatia) and senior
Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) to flip the contest over to the singles side.
Montalvo maintained her momentum in the second flight against Blasdale as she was the lone Javelina to take a perfect 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win over her foe for the second team point. She was followed by Romanovskaia in the top billing who downed Hamilton at 6-0, 6-1, to put TAMUK on the brink of a win.
Sindicic pushed the Blue and Gold over the top in the fifth matchup as she downed Ambrose at 6-1, 6-0 to seal the win for the visitors.
Freshman
Daniela Koleva (Kocani, North Macedonia) officially secured her first collegiate win as she defeated Marissa Sena in the sixth position in straight sets at 6-2, 6-1. Ruiz was the penultimate Javelina to secure a point for her team with the fifth consecutive straight-set victory as she came away with the win in the fourth pairing at 6-1, 6-2 over Megilligan.
The cherry on top of the Sunday matchup was Donkor who worked out a 6-4 win in the first set against Sproston and cruised to a 6-0 win in the second set to bring the contest to a close.
The Javelinas have a week off before they return to the court with a trip to Orlando on the docket for the upcoming week. They will take on Northwood on Sunday, March 8, before taking on Quincy two days later on Tuesday, March 10.
