Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Chauncey Thomas (Plano, Texas) matched his career-high with 19 points and two other Javelinas reached double figures in scoring, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team was still handed its second straight defeat, a 75-60 loss to the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals in Lone Star Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
"We could not find a rhythm today on offense," said coach Johnny Estelle, "and didn't have enough defensive intensity in order to win. Coach Duncan and his staff did a good job and we have to recover and make the proper adjustments going into another difficult week."
The Javelinas are now 18-8 overall and 14-6 in conference play. They are now even with LCU and Angelo State in third place, but the Chaps and Rams both hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Javs as the teams compete for a top four spot in the league's regular season standings and a first-round bye in the LSC Tournament.
For Thomas, his 19 points came on 7-of-9 shooting and led all scorers. Senior John Mouton (Missouri City, Texas) finished with 15 points and tied with junior Dayante McClellan (Austin, Texas) for a team-high six rebounds. McClellan put up 10 points.
Lubbock started the game on a 9-2 run, but the Hogs responded with 17 of the next 26 points. Thomas scored six of those points, including two free throws to put his team ahead 19-18 with 6:24 left.
That lead was short-lived, however. The Chaps used three triples to put together another 9-2 burst and rode that momentum to a 35-27 halftime edge.
The home team quickly pushed its lead to nine in the second half at 42-33 before a trey courtesy of sophomore Creighton Avery (Corpus Christi, Texas) sparked a 7-2 spurt and the Javelinas got within 44-40. Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, LCU took over after that. They scored the next nine points and the Javs never got within 10 points after that.
"We're not playing well," said Estelle, "but I do believe everything we're not doing well can and will be corrected."
