LSC RELEASE
Recently, Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico both opted out of the 2020-21 basketball schedules due to the state of New Mexico's health guidelines related to COVID-19.
The updated schedule has regular season games beginning on Friday, December 11 with crossover contests, while divisional play starts in January 2021 after the NCAA Division II Winter Break.
This year, 15 men's and 15 women's teams will compete in three divisions (North, South and West) consisting of five institutions each. Each team is scheduled to play 20 conference games with divisional and crossover competition throughout the year. During weeks in which a team plays a divisional opponent, each institution will have one contest at home and one on the road. When a team faces an opponent from outside its division, both crossover games will be played at the same site on back-to-back days.
The modified 'bubble' schedule format enhances student-athlete safety with regard to COVID-19 and reduces the amount of contact amongst teams by playing the same opponent twice during the week.
The conference tournament will consist of the top eight men's and women's with first-round games on-campus on Tuesday, March 2 followed by the four winning teams advancing to the final site at the highest remaining seed on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6.
The Javelinas will compete in the five-team South Division beginning December 11 with their first opponent from the North Division in UAFS. The following week will see both teams on the road at Angelo State on December 18 before the start of the break.
Coming back in 2021, the first divisional game for the Blue and Gold will see the teams pitted against Texas A&M International starting January 2 before hosting UT Permian Basin the following week. A home-and-home with St. Mary's awaits TAMUK starting January 14 before a road trip to Canyon, Texas, will take the teams to West Texas A&M the next week.
The final week of January wil have the Hogs host Cameron while the beginning of February will see the teams host another divisional opponent in St. Edward's. One more road trip, this time against A&M-Commerce, will take place the second week of February, while the regular season finale will see TAMUK take on UT Tyler to close out divisional play.
The conference tournament will take precede the NCAA Regionals on March 12-13, while the Division II Women's Basketball Finals will take place in Columbus, Ohio, on March 23, and the men's Elite Eight is set for March 24 in Evansville, Indiana.
