Robinson takes High Jump Crown at USATF Outdoor Championships

Downs finishes eighth in 800m

DES MOINES, Iowa – The USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships came to a close on Sunday at Drake Stadium, and a pair of former Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field made their way to the podium in their respective events to highlight the final day of competition.

Jeron Robinson (2013-16), a five-time high jump national champion for the Javelinas between the indoor and outdoor seasons, leapt to the top of the event at the four-day meet after clearing the bar at 2.30m (7-6.50) on his third try to grab the gold.

Robinson claimed the same medal at the 2018 version of the outdoor championships after clearing the bar at 2.31m (7-7) on his second attempt to start his summer run. He added a first-place finish in the same event at the 2018 Athletics World Cup in London and followed up with his third title of the summer at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships in Toronto.

Meanwhile, Robert Downs (2017-18) made the finals of the 800m run as he ran a then-personal-best of 1:47.03 in the preliminaries on day one to finish second in his heat, third overall. He one-upped his time the next day with a time of 1:46.46 to secure a spot in Sunday's finale.

Downs ended his run at the championships by clocking in at 1:48.35 to finish eighth overall in the event.

Prior to his professional debut a few weeks earlier, Downs helped lead the Hogs to the program's first-ever NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championship in 2018 in Charlotte, N.C., as he finished sixth in the 800m with a time of 1:48.68.
