KINGSVILLE, Texas – For the second time this season, senior
Talleyshia Morris (Tulsa, Okla.) posted a double-double with 21 kills and 11 total blocks, but it came in a losing effort for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team, a 25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 18-25, 15-13 setback to the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds in Lone Star Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
Morris' stat line on Saturday is identical to the one she finished with on Oct. 12
th against St. Mary's and both marks match her season-highs. They also led all match participants and her .436 hitting percentage was TAMUK's best.
Three other Javelinas hit double figures in kills, including sophomore
Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas) with 13, sophomore
Jordan Wonders (Corpus Christi, Texas) with 12 and junior
Meghan Merlino (Sacramento, Calif.) with 11.
Junior
Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) set a new TAMUK season-high in assists with 42 and added 16 digs. Previously, Morris' highest assist total in 2019 was eight. Three Javs joined Morris in topping 10 scoops, a group that was headlined by freshman
Jordan Schenkel (San Antonio, Texas), who registered her highest dig total of 2019 with 27. Sophomore
Alexa Ruiz (Schertz, Texas) logged a career-best 22 digs and Merlino recorded 18 scoops.
The largest lead by either team in the first set was three points and the score was tied 14 times before the Greyhounds came out ahead. With the Javelinas holding a fragile, 17-16 lead, the Greyhounds slowly moved into the lead, winning eight of 12 to reach set point at 24-21. The Javs came back with two-in-a-row on a kill from
Talleyshia Morris and an ENMU attack error, but Julie Tucker's smash gave the visitors the 25
th point.
The second set included multiple lead changes, starting with the Greyhounds winning five of six points to put themselves in the lead 8-5. Eight of the next 10 scores were by the Javelinas, including multiple kills by Estrada and Wonders, for a 13-10 advantage. ENMU then won six-in-a-row to go ahead 16-13, only to see the difference quickly trimmed to one. Five times the Javelinas got within one point of a tie, but they couldn't get level. They Greyhounds clinched a 2-0 lead by taking the last five rallies, the last one coming on a TAMUK attack error.
With some help from Wonders and Estrada, who teamed up for consecutive blocks, the Javelinas jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third frame. ENMU's response came in the form of a 7-3 run that tied the score. The third frame would contain 13 more ties, including one at 24-24 following a block by ENMU. With the visitors on the verge of a match-point, the Javelinas refused to fold, moving back into the lead thanks to a finisher from Estrada and taking the set following an ace from Schenkel.
The Javelinas continued to fight in the next game and managed to even the match. The Greyhounds took an 9-6 advantage before a kill, a block assist and ace from
Talleyshia Morris helped tie things at 10. ENMU moved back by five, 17-12 and the Javelinas found another answer. They dominated the rest of the set, winning 13 of 14 points, including a period of nine-in-a-row. Wonders, senior
Melanie Casteel (Dallas, Texas),
Talleyshia Morris and sophomore
Emily North (Red Oak, Texas) all tallied multiple points during the run and North's ace sent the match to a fifth stanza.
ENMU got on the board first in the last set and owned a 7-5 lead following an Adriana Puni smash. The next four scores were by the home team for a 9-7 advantage and their lead stood at 11-9 moments later. At that point, the Greyhounds stole the momentum. They collected six of the final eight points, the clincher coming on a Christelle Kialanda kill, and edged TAMUK for the victory.
