DALLAS, Texas – The Dallas Baptist Patriots held the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team to 31 kills, their second-lowest total of the year, and defeated the Javelinas, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23, on Friday night in Lone Star Conference action at the Burg Center in Dallas, Texas.
Junior Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) led the Javelinas in assists and digs on the night. Her 18 helpers were the most in the match and she also added 15 scoops. Finishing right behind Morris in the latter category was freshman Jordan Schenkel (San Antonio, Texas) with 14. Sophomore Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas) led the Javs in kills with six.
The Patriots strung together five straight points in the early stages of the first set, pushing a 3-2 lead to 8-2. The home team later stretched their lead to 10 at 20-10 before the Javs managed to cut into their deficit. A smash from Estrada sparked a 6-0 run to pull the Javs within four, but DBU was able to regain control soon after. They took five of the next seven scores and a Kasey Holland kill counted the 25th point.
The lead changed hands several times in the second set, with TAMUK leading 2-0, DBU jumping in front 7-4, TAMUK moving back ahead 9-8 and eventually 14-11 after a kill from senior Talleyshia Morris (Tulsa, Okla.) and an attack error by DBU. The advantage swung to the Patriots after they scored four-in-a-row, but the Javs came back with three straight to make the score 17-15. Unfortunately for TAMUK, the final run of the set belonged to the home team, which again logged four consecutive scores and prevented the Javelinas from answering. Keely Hardin's kill staked DBU to a 2-0 lead.
A quick 8-5, DBU lead in the third game was erased by the Javs thanks to a 7-2 burst that included two Talleyshia Morris smashes. A 5-1 run for the Patriots vaulted them back in front as the Javelinas continued to fight back. Five times they cut their deficit to one before sophomore Emily North (Red Oak, Texas) tied the score at 23 with her third kill of the night. That would be TAMUK's final point of the night, though, as kills from Emma Eakin and Brooke Clarke closed a win for Dallas Baptist.
The final road game of the 2019 regular season for the Javelinas is on Saturday and it pits them against Tarleton in a match that will begin at 2 p.m. inside Wisdom Gym in Stephenville, Texas.
