Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Roxy Chapa clouted a pair of home runs and drove in five, sparking the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team to an 8-0 victory over the Midwestern State Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Field in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Craig Nicholson's club has now won five straight to reach 8-7 and their Lone Star Conference record is an even 3-3. MSU's third straight loss puts them at 3-3 in conference and 8-5 overall.
Chapa wasted no time providing her team with the lead. A single by Loren Kelly to lead-off the game and a walk to Rachael Longoria put two runners on ahead of her and TAMUK's catcher proceeded to hit a rocket over the left field fence and Kingsville went ahead 3-0.
Two innings later, Longoria drew another walk to bring up Chapa, who this time hit a long fly to center that cleared the wall for a two-run round-tripper, but that wasn't all the Hoggies would get in the frame. Another free pass, followed by a Haley Boyett single and an out put Delila Gillespie in the batter's box. The junior squared up an 0-1 offering and sent it out to left, tallying her first homer of the season and supplying starter Sarah Gilbert with an 8-0 cushion.
That proved to be more than enough for the Florida native, who completely shut down Midwestern State's offense. In five innings, she allowed just three hits and didn't issue a walk while striking out five. Gilbert stranded runners in scoring position three times, including in the fifth, when she pitched around a two-out double and induced a ground ball from Kelcee Thomson for the final out of TAMUK's run rule victory.
The Javelinas will carry their win streak into a home doubleheader against St. Edwards on Tuesday, with the first game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Javelina softball can be found on Twitter @TAMUKSB and fans can also like /JavelinaSports on Facebook and subscribe to the Javelina athletics YouTube channel.
