KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (23-23, 12-13 LSC) has its final non conference doubleheader of the season against Texas A&M International University (17-29, 11-7 Heartland Conference) on Tuesday, April 25 beginning at 4 p.m. at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field.
Although falling in the series, the Javelinas topped #6 West Texas A&M to keep their hopes alive for an appearance in the LSC Softball Tournament. Texas A&M-Kingsville is led by Victoria Schoonard-Saborio who has reached the bags in 23 consecutive games and ranks eighth in all of Division II with a .554 on-base percentage. Schoonard-Saborio's .468 batting average is second in the conference and she leads the team with eight home runs this year. Haley Boyett (.355) follows the sophomore's lead in the box and has a team-high of seven stolen bases this season. Roxy Chapa is next in line with her .353 batting average, leads the Hogs with 33 ribbies and currently has an eight-game hitting-streak and eight-game reach streak active. Chapa and Schoonard-Saborio are tied with nine multiple RBI games, followed by leadoff hitter Rachael Longoria (.327) who has six multiple RBI games. Longoria tallies 49 hits this season, 36 runs scored and 27 RBIs.Â
Randa Hatter rounds out TAMUK's .300 hitters with a .307 batting average and has went yard five times in 2017. Hatter also spends time in the circle where she post a 5-6 record, a 3.91 ERA and holds opponent batters to a team-low .222 average. Sarah Gilbert (6-3) has a bullpen-low 3.73 ERA in 56.1 innings, while senior Carlie Clark (3-7, 4.31 ERA) has tossed 76.1 innings in 20 appearances and has the clubs only no-hitter of the year. Ace Breanna Smith is 9-7 on the rubber with a 3.98 ERA in 102 innings pitched. Her 87 strikeouts is seventh in the league and she leads the pitching staff with eight complete games and three shutouts.
Despite being on a three-game winning streak, TAMIU has lost their last seven games against LSC opponents and has an overall 3-15 record against the league this season. Nevertheless they have a winning record in the Heartland Conference and have won nine games on the road this year. The Dustdevils are led offensively by Brenda Pamin's .318 batting average and 42 hits, while adding 20 runs scored and 17 RBIs to her stat line. Delainy Thompson is the caption of the pitching staff with a 11-13 record, 2.72 ERA and 93 putouts in 146.2 inning pitched. Thompson has thrown 19 complete games and has three shutouts under her belt.Â
The Hoggies swept the Dustdevils earlier this season (6-4, 4-1) led by Schoonard-Saborio's 6-for-7 performance at the dish in the twinbill. The two wins in late February improved the all-time series record to 23-16 in favor of the Javs and they also hold a 12-7 edge when playing in Kingsville.Â
