Hogs Achieve Two NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying Marks on Day Two of Texas Relays

Texas A&M-Kingsville set new Division II marks on Day Two of the Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas (Track and Field) – Day two for Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Spectrum was nothing short of successful as both teams combined for two NCAA Division II automatic qualifying marks, one qualifying time at the Texas Relays and six total provisional marks on Friday.

Vitaly Zhgun finished fourth in the men's javelin throw after tossing a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark of 70.84 meters (232' 5") on his very first throw of the day. That mark currently sits at the top of the charts of all Division II participants this season and is second in the school's record book. Javier Lopez qualifies to compete in the men's final 110-meter hurdles after timing out at a provisional 13.92 seconds for a seventh place finish. Christian Garcia placed fifth in the men's shot put section B finals with a provo 16.70-meter launch (54' 9.50") and Jorge Rios also placed fifth in the men's discus throe section B with a provisional throw of 50.77 meters (166' 7"). Brandon Wilson was the only other representative for the men today as he placed 19th in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.52 seconds.

The women hit all provisional marks and then some, beginning with Kaina Martinez who topped her nation-leading time in the 100-meter dash with a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time of 11.52 seconds. Not only does that time sits first in DII and ties for third in the school's record book, but it also matches a career-best for the senior. Plaserae Johnson also competed in the 100-meter dash and crossed the tape 28th with a provisional time of 11.71 seconds. Neither times qualified for the finals however. LaGae Brigance finished 13th in section B of the high jump with a provisional leap of 1.70 meters (5' 7"). All three ladies along with Teandria Taylor ran a provisional time of 45.82 seconds in the women's 4x100-meter relay. Although they placed 13th overall, the time is the third fastest in school history.

The Texas Relays will conclude tomorrow with Lopez running in the men's finals for the 110-meter hurdles and Martinez, Brigance, Taylor and Johnson competing in the women's 4x200-meter relay.
