Javelinas in Search of an Upset Over Cameron

The Javelinas have the third longest active winning streak in the Lone Star Conference

LAWTON, Okla. (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (18-16, 8-9 LSC) continues its push towards the Lone Star Conference Softball Championships with an intriguing three-game series against Cameron University (23-11, 11-4 LSC) at McMahon Field on March 31-April 1.

The series will open with a doubleheader on March 31 at 1 and 3 p.m. and conclude on April Fools Day with a single game at 1 p.m. 

Texas A&M-Kingsville is warming up at the right time and is currently on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Houston Victoria after topping A&M-Commerce in a three-game series. Victoria Schoonard-Saborio leads the Javs with a .390 batting average and paces the club with a .580 slugging percentage and .487 on-base percentage. Schoonard-Saborio has 39 hits, 26 runs scored and five home runs this season, while tying Roxy Chapa (.358) with 11 multiple hit games. Chapa sets the pace with 28 RBIs, eight multiple RBI games and six dingers in the 2017 season. Rachael Longoria and Haley Boyett both bat .369 at the plate and Arabella Acosta-Cantu rounds out the top hitters for the Hogs at .304. 

The Javelinas have a deep bullpen starting with Randa Hatter (5-5, 3.84 ERA), Breanna Smith (7-6, 4.06 ERA), Carlie Clark (2-4, 4.12 ERA) and Sarah Gilbert (4-1, 5.31 ERA). Smith is the clubs ace as she has team-highs of 74 Ks, six complete games, two shutouts and two saves in 79.1 innings pitched.

Although tied for second in the LSC with an 11-4 record, Cameron has lost its last four games including being shutout in a doubleheader at Midwestern State. The Aggies post a 7-3 record at home this season and has a strong offensive unit that has accumulated 29 home runs, the third most in the league.

The Ags are led by Breezy McComas in the batter's box with her .351 average, 33 hits, 26 runs scored and adds six homers this season. Brenna Busby follows with a .324 batting average and also has 33 hits. Brenna Busby ties for a team-best seven longballs and leads the team with 26 RBIs— one behind sister Callie Busby (.301) who also has 31 hits, and a team-high nine doubles on the year. Paige Daino (.309) is the other home run leader with seven bombs and has 24 RBIs and 23 runs scored on the season.

Bethany Hines (17-5) is the captain of the pitching staff with her 2.88 ERA in 138 innings pitched. Hines 91 strikeouts (31 looking) is second in the LSC and her 17 wins ties for first in the conference and ranks third in all of Division II. Alyssa Osterdock (6-6, 3.71 ERA) has also seen time in the circle and has tossed eight complete games with 16 strikeouts in 77.1 innings. 

Last season, Kingsville snapped an 11-game losing streak against Cameron and split the four-game series in South Texas. Despite the long drought, the all-time series is locked at 16 games apiece however, TAMUK is 1-7 as the visiting club.
