Hogs/Buffs Rubber Match on the Horizon

History has a chance to repeat itself as we look back to the last time the Javelinas were named LSC Tournament Champions

ALLEN, Texas (Men's Basketball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (17-10, 10-8 LSC) finds themselves turning back the clock as they face West Texas A&M University (24-7, 12-6 LSC) in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Friday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m., at the Allen Event Center.

Although West Texas A&M leads the all-time series 47-24, the last time they faced Texas A&M-Kingsville in the LSC Tournament was in the 1995-96 season. TAMUK defeated WTAMU 94-85 in the opening round and went on to hoist the LSC Tournament trophy. The team was led by now head coach Johnny Estelle.

The Javelinas matchup against the No. 3 team in the South Central Region and LSC Tournament for the third time this season. In the regular season series, both clubs won on their home floors with the Hogs taking the latter 76-59 for their second-largest winning margin of the year.

In the first two meetings, the Hogs averaged 70.5 PPG and shot a .418 clip from the floor, and .433 percent from deep. They also held the league-leading Buffs to a 30 percent three-point field goal percentage and forced 33 turnovers. Duan Wright led the way by averaging 13.5 points in the two games, shooting just under 60 percent from the floor and was 3-of-5 from three-point range. Derrick Byrd follows Wright with 11.5 PPG, while Trey Sumpter and Marcus Frazier both chipped in 9.5 PPG. Sumpter paces the Hoggies with 7.5 rebounds per game and Frazier is a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown to contribute to hit 50 percent field goal percentage in the series.

After falling to TAMUK on the road (2/16/17), WTAMU went on to win its final three games including a 74-65 season finale against Tarleton State. Although David Chavlovich leads the conference with 20.3 PPG this season, he was held to just 11 points in game two against the Javelinas (three in the second half) and received a DNP in game one as he sat out for rest.

The winner of tomorrows dual will move on to the semi-finals and face off against No. 7 Angelo State who upset No. 2 Tarleton State in the quarter-finals 85-82.

Kevin Piel will call the action live from javelinaathletics.com. Live stats and stream will also be available on the school's website.
