KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-5, 3-3 LSC) will close the opening month of the 2017 softball season with a doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson University (5-6-1, 3-5 RRAC) on Tuesday, February 28 at 4 and 6 p.m.
The Javelinas are currently on a five-game winning streak after sweeping a pair of schools in Texas A&M International and Lone Star Conference foe Midwestern State, bringing the Javs to .500 in conference play.
Victoria Schoonard-Saborio enters the series with five multiple hit games including a 4-for-4 performance against Texas A&M International. The California native leads the team with a five-game hitting streak and has a .366 batting average, .512 slugging percentage, and two home runs in 46 at bats. Haley Boyett is on her own four-game hitting streak and bats .350 at the dish while registering a team-best eight RBI. Rachael Longoria sits just outside of .300 at the plate (.297) but has driven in seven runs this season, tied with Roxy Chapa (.275) and Alexei Gonzalez (.250). Longoria has reached in seven consecutive games followed by Boyett and Randa Hatter who's done it in six straight games.Â
Hatter, a true freshman, has an impressive .375 batting average with a .750 slugging percentage and two dingers— both in game one vs. TAMIU— in just 24 at bats. She is also 2-2 in the circle this season with eight strikeouts, tying Sarah Gilbert (2-0), in 19.2 innings. Carlie Clark (1-1) has a bullpen-low 3.57 ERA and has 20 Ks, while holding opponent batters to a .227 average. Breanna Smith (3-2) has also tossed 30 innings this year and has logged two complete games and 17 strikeouts with a 5.70 ERA.Â
Huston-Tillotson is on a two-game winning streak after a 2-2 split with Our Lady of the Lake. Gina Garza leads the team with a .476 batting average and 20 hits, followed by Meranda Rodriguez who has a .400 batting average and one home run. Mercedes Hatheway (.360), Jennifer Lopez (.353) and Sarah Rodriguez (.303) all bat over .300. Audrey Aguirre (3-2) has a 4.00 ERA in 21 innings pitched, while Amanda Aguilera (2-3) has a 5.53 ERA in her five complete games tossed and 16 strikeouts in 44.1 innings. Â
