Back-to-Back Sweeps for Javelinas

The Javelinas get back to .500 in the Lone Star Conference after downing the Mustangs this weekend

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-5, 3-3 LSC) extends its winning streak to five after sweeping Midwestern State University (9-11, 2-4 LSC) in the series with 5-1 and 6-5 victories on Saturday afternoon at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field.

Texas A&M-Kingsville dominated Midwestern State in the first game by jumping out to a 5-0 lead and earned the sweep after having to go one extra inning in game two in a 6-5 walk-off win. Victoria Schoonard-Saborio has a team-best five consecutive games with a hit and smacked her second solo shot this season in the game one. Rachael Longoria and Haley Boyett both finished with three hits and two RBIs and are on a seven and six-game reach based streak, respectively. Lauren Oatman, Randa Hatter and Arabella Acosta-Cantu all finished with two hits today and played key offensive roles in the two wins.

Game 1
The pitchers battled early as both teams did not cross a run through the first three innings. Breanna Smith registered two strikeouts and gave up one hit in that span, while Peyton Helton gave up two hits with no strikeouts. Smith picked up the win to improve to 3-2 in the circle and Helton dropped to .500 (4-4) after relinquishing eight total hits and committing three errors.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Acosta-Cantu was credited with an RBI after singling to center field. However a throwing error from the catcher gave two more runners the green light—including Acosta-Cantu—to take a 3-0 lead.

The Javelinas scored two runs on four hits, highlighted by a solo shot from Schoonard-Saborio for her second of the season to lead-off the fifth frame. Lindsey Angelico (who pinch ran for Hatter) was batted in by Delila Gillespie later in the inning, increasing the lead 5-0.

The Mustangs refused to be shut out after Lauren Lindgren crossed home plate in the top of the sixth inning. Lindgren singled and advance all the way to third base on two Javelina throwing errors. Carli Woolsey sent one to center field to bring Lindgren home but was all that the Hoggies allowed as they closed the Stangs out in the seventh for the 5-1 win.

Schoonard-Saborio and Acosta-Cantu both went 2-for-3 at the dish while Hatter, Chapa, Gillespie and Boyett finished the game with one hit.

Game 2
The Javelinas got on the board first for the fourth consecutive game. With bases loaded, Longoria singled to left field to plate Boyett who reached on a single to right field earlier in the second inning. The Javelinas added three more runs in the next inning to take a 4-0 lead, but the Mustangs knotted the game in the fourth that featured four runs on three hits.

In crunch time, Midwestern State experienced a case of deja vu after Longoria's single scored Boyett once again to give the Hogs a slight 5-4 lead in the fifth.

Both teams was scoreless in the sixth inning but a homer by Misty Muniz in the seventh ties the game and the Mustangs forced an extra inning after grounding out the Javelinas first three batters.

MSU had an opportunity with the go-ahead run in scoring position, but Lindgren grounded out to the hot corner to end the top of the eighth. In the bottom half inning, it was Longoria again who sparked all of the action. A lead-off single ignited the bats at the right time as Schoonard-Saborio followed with her second hit of the game, and Hatter singled down the right field line to score Longoria and complete the sweep with the second walk-off win in the three-game series.

Longoria finished with game with a game-high three hits to go along with her two RBIs. Boyett also brought home two players and batted .500 as did Lauren Oatman. Schoonard-Saborio was 2-for-5 at the plate, while Gonzalez, Flores and of course Hatter, finished with one hit.

Sarah Gilbert (2-0) was given the win after pitching one inning. Hatter started the game and pitched 3.1 innings before relieved by Carlie Clark who tossed 3.2 innings, striking out half of the 14 batters she faced. Kelsey Knox receives a loss in her first start and complete game of the season after pitching just one strikeout.

The Hogs will return to Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson at 4 and 6 p.m.
