KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (10-5, 3-3 LSC) extends its winning streak to seven after run ruling Huston-Tillotson University (5-8-1, 3-5 RRAC) 10-0 in game one and defeating them 8-3 in game two on Tuesday evening at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field.
Texas A&M-Kingsville's bats were untouchable in the doubleheader this evening with ten of 12 batters hitting over .330. Huston-Tillotson did not register a single strikeout in the series as the home team batted .426 on 23 hits and had a .685 slugging percentage. The Javelinas went yard on three different occasions including a leadoff home run in game one from Racheal Longoria (.375) to set the tone.
Roxy Chapa batted .667 and drove in four runs. In game two, Chapa drilled a ball deep over center field to score three runs in a plentiful fourth inning. Alexei Gonzalez also had a three-run shot (game one) to log her first bomb of the season and finished the day with a .400 batting average. Haley Boyett and Victoria Schoonard-Saborio both hit .500, while Hatter had a .429 batting average.Â
Other notable performances came from Lindsey Angelico (.500 batting average) and Arabella Acosta-Cantu who was .667 at the plate and stole two bags including home plate in the series sweep. Â Â
Game 1
Longoria got things started quickly for the Javelinas with a leadoff shot down the left field line to begin the bottom of the first. The Hogs created some space in the next bottom inning by crossing home plate four times on six hits.
Gonzalez had an eventful end to the run rule victory as she crossed the dish in the fourth after reaching on a double and tacked on three more runs in the fifth with a three-run homer. The three-run shot brought home Boyett and Andrews en route to the 10-0 shutout.
Breanna Smith improved to 4-2 in the circle this year after throwing a complete game, striking out seven batters and giving up just two hits. Audrey Aguirre also pitched a complete game but had no strikeouts and relinquished 13 hits to fall to 3-3.
Five of nine Javelina players had two hits including Longoria, Schoonard-Saborio, Hatter, Acosta-Cantu and Gonzalez. Longoria and Gonzalez each drove in three runs, while Schoonard-Saborio (2-of-2) and Chapa (1-of-3) accounted for the other two RBI.
Game 2
The Rams looked to redeem themselves in game two as Meranda Rodriguez went yard in the second to put her team on the scoreboard first. However, the Hoggies matched them in the bottom inning after walking Angelico with the bases loaded. TAMUK took the lead in the third inning with a single off of Boyett's bat, driving in Schoonard-Saborio who led off the inning with a single.
A&M-Kingsville's bats got hot in the fourth inning as they scored six runs on four hits, highlighted by a three-run missile over center field from Chapa. Huston-Tillotson crossed two runs in the final two innings, but could not overcome the Javelinas six-run surge dropping the final game 8-3.
Chapa was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate and had a game-high of three RBI. Boyett struck twice in the game and plated one batter, while Angelico had one double and two RBI. Longoria, Schoonard-Saborio, Hatter and Amanda Thacker all concluded the game with a hit.Â
Hatter tossed complete game No. 2 of the season and dealt a season-best five strikeouts to move to 3-2. Cynthia Martinez picked up her second loss (0-2) in 3.2 innings of work. Audrey Aguirre relieved her for 2.1 innings but neither could record a strikeout.Â
The Blue and Gold will hit the road for a three-game series against new Lone Star Conference member UT Permian Basin on March 3-4.
