Softball Opens Lone Star Conference Schedule

In just their second week into the 2017 season, The Javelinas dive into conference competition with Angelo State first on the docket

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (3-2, 0-0 LSC) jumps into Lone Star Conference action with a series against Angelo State University (10-1, 0-0 LSC) at Mayer Field beginning Friday at 5 p.m. and ends with a double-dip on Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m.

The Javelinas opened the season at the North Texas Softball Bash last weekend where they went 3-2 against regional opponents. Roxy Chapa ended the weekend with a .400 batting average and led with six hits including two doubles on 15 plate appearances. Rachel Longoria was essential both offensively and defensively as she hit .364 at the dish and recorded 16 assists from the hot corner to lead the team. Haley Boyett rounds out the top hitters (min. of 10 at bats) with a BA of .333 and has tallied five hits and three ribbies, tying a team-high with Chapa and Alexei Gonzalez.

In the circle, Randa Hatter (1-1) leads the team with a 2.03 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched and tossed one complete game. Fellow freshman Breanna Smith leads the club with seven strike outs and has an ERA of 3.12. The upperclassmen in the bullpen consist of Sarah Gilbert (1-0) and Carlie Clark (0-0) who split 12 K's evenly in a grand total of 13.2 innings.

The LSC season begins for Texas A&M-Kingsville who will be hosted by a strong Angelo State club that leads the league with an 1.38 earned run average and 67 strikeouts that contributes to 5 shutouts so far this season. Offensively, the Belles rank second with a .361 batting average and 13 home runs. With four batters in the .400 club in the 11 games played this season, ASU is led by Madison Greenwell and Bailey Wallace who ties with a .469 batting average. Both players have a team-best 15 hits, while Greenwell not only leads conference with three triples, but also is the school's record holder in that statistical category. Courtney Barnhill (.448) and Danae Bina (.444) both sit near the top of the LSC with five stolen bases and concludes the .400 club.

The Javs trail in the all-time series 43-12 and are currently on a six-game losing streak against the Rambelles. Nevertheless, TAMUK looks to top ASU on their home field for the first time since shutting them out 1-0 on April 18, 2009.
