Hogs and Dustdevils Clash for Consecutive Games

Texas A&M-Kingsville leads the LSC in three-point field goal defense at 28.9 percent

KINGSVILLE, Texas – With an unblemished record still intact, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (5-0) looks to continue its early-season momentum with a pair of games against Texas A&M International University (3-1) on each team's home floor. The first will be Tuesday, November 21 (7:30 p.m.) on the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court, followed by a Friday, November 24 (7:30 p.m.) matchup at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.

In the latest D2SIDA men's basketball regional poll, Texas A&M-Kingsville jumped up to No. 5 after being tied for ninth last week. The 5-0 mark for the Hogs is the best start for the program since 2007-08 under head coach Pete Peterson.

This will be the second consecutive season that the Javelinas and Dustdevils will play back-to-back home-and-home games. Last season TAMUK won both meetings, including a 65-56 victory inside the SPEC.

It's been a great start to the 2017-18 campaign for the Blue and Gold, especially defensively, where they rank 11th in the country in scoring defense (61.2 PPG), 11th in turnovers forced (102), and 14th in total steals (45). Kingsville leads the Lone Star Conference in both categories. Offensively, the Hogs are the second-leading team in the league with a 15.4 scoring margin, scoring 76.6 points per game.

Trey Sumpter is the Javelinas top scorer with 11.4 points per game after averaging 20 at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic Tournament in Pueblo, Colo. Sumpter also leads the team with seven steals, while averaging 4.4 rebounds per game. Jacolby Harris averages 9.0 points per contest, followed by Derrick Byrd's 8.8 points and team-high 15 assists.

The Dustdevils are coming off of two straight wins at the River City Classic Tournament held in San Antonio, Texas. They defeated Randall University 77-71, and then took care of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 65-55. TAMIU averages 70 points per contest with a 45.9 shooting percentage. Xabier Gomez, Jeremy Wright, and Dan Milota each average 14 points per game. Gomez has a .615 clip from the three-point line, Wright is the team leader with 23 assists and 11 steals, and Milota shoots over 50 percent from the floor and has a solid 84.6 percentage at the free throw line.
