Hogs Head to the Rockies for Al Kaly Shrine Tournament

Texas A&M-Kingsville cap off their first three-game road trip in Colorado

PUEBLO, Colo. – The 34th Annual Al Kaly Shrine Classic Tournament will feature Texas A&M University-Kingsville (3-0) on November 17-18. The Javelinas will take on host Colorado State University-Pueblo (1-1) on Friday at 8 p.m. central time and then end the tournament against Adam's State University (0-2) on Saturday at 4 p.m. central time.

Texas A&M-Kingsville has arguably the best defense in the conference albeit a short sample. The Javelinas hold their opponents to 56.3 points per game, forces 24 turnovers per game, and has accumulated 11.3 steals per game which all lead the LSC.

TAMUK prides itself on being a play-by-committee team with an extended bench that causes headaches for the opposition. So much so that the team's leading scorer – Jacolby Harris – averages 11 points per game and has eight assists coming off of the bench. Derrick Byrd has a 9.7 scoring average with eight assists followed by Will West and Christian Bambrook who both average eight points per contest.

CSU-Pueblo is halfway through its four-game homestand, entering the Al Kaly Shrine Classic with a 1-1 record after toppling Rogers State 84-65 and falling in a nail-biter to Arkansas-Fort Smith 86-83 in the conference challenge between the RMAC and Heartland Conference.

The ThunderWolves average 83.5 points per game with a .450 field goal percentage from the floor, and .440 percentage from the three-point line. B.J. Hardy and Will Newman both lead the team with an average of 18 points per game. Hardy is an efficient 71 percent shooter from the floor and behind the arc, while Newman has a .842 clip from the free throw line and leads the team with 4.5 assists per game and four total steals.

Despite a 0-2 start, Adam's State is a feisty group. They lost their season opener against #21 West Texas A&M 90-69 and then took #11 UT Permian Basin to double overtime before losing 125-115. The Grizzlies will play WT for the second time on Friday, November 17 and will conclude against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.

Adam's shoots under 50 percent and has a –15.5 scoring margin. The Achilles heel for ASU is starting slow, being outscored by their opponents 106-81 in the first half. Jarrett Givens scores 18 points per game and has five steals. Brandon Sly is right behind him with 17.5 points per game and a team-high of 12 assists.

Live stats and stream for both games will be made available on the men's basketball schedule page on javelinaathletics.com.
