KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Fans at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field were treated to two different games as
Karri Smith stole the show with a complete game in game one's 7-1 victory and
Lindsey Angelico went 4-for-5 with four runs scored in game two and Texas A&M University-Kingsville (10-15) tied the game four times before walking off with a 9-8 victory in 11 innings Monday afternoon.
With the victories, the Javelinas swept the regular season series versus Oklahoma Christian University (14-13), a team that is unbeaten in Heartland Conference play.
The Javelinas scored two runs in fifth to tie game two at 3-3 and matched the Eagles with a run in the eighth, two runs in the ninth and two runs in the 11
th before the walk-off run scored on an error.
Alexei Gonzalez finished the doubleheader 4-for-8 with four RBI.
Game OneGonzalez continued to impress in just her fifth game in a Javelina uniform, concluding game one 2-for-4 with four RBI and Smith tossed a complete game to improve to 3-4 on the year as Texas A&M-Kingsville took game one, 7-1.
Corinne Brassell went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Eagles struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third, but the Javelinas held Oklahoma Christian's offense to just one run and five hits.
Gonzalez drove in two runs on an opposite field single in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. The hit was followed with back-to-back RBI singles by Brassell and Angelico for a three-run lead.
The offense continued its scoring ways in the fifth as TAMUK plated three on three hits as Gonzalez drove in two on a single to center field and Brassell followed with an RBI double to give the Hogs a 7-1 lead.
Smith was credited with the W after her third complete game of the season while Madison Hagood fell to 9-4 on the year after walking five and allowing six runs in 4.1 innings. All seven RBI came from the bottom of the Javelina order as Gonzalez (seventh), Brassell (eighth) and Angelico (ninth) finished 5-for-9 with a run scored and seven ribbies.
Game TwoAngelico went 4-for-5 with four runs from the nine-spot in the Javelina batting order as Texas A&M-Kingsville compiled 14 hits in the 11-inning ballgame, none bigger than
Roxy Chapa's solo shot to lead off the bottom of the eighth that tied the game at 6-6. Angelico was a home run away from the cycle and ended the latter game with two doubles, a triple and a single for eight total bases.
Chapa finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored, Gonzalez was 2-for-5 and
Victoria Schoonard-Saborio drove in two runs.
Carlie Clark (4-4) earned the victory after 3.2 innings in relief, striking out nine.
Sarah Gilbert tossed 3.2 innings of one-run ball and
Michaela Huebotter picked up the no-decision with after going 3.2 innings in the circle. Hagood (9-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs – two earned – in 2.1 innings.
Angelico doubled to right center in the third and scored on
Delila Gillespie's pinch hit single to give the Javelinas first licks.
OCU responded with three runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, but TAMUK answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game up at 3-3. Brassell led off with an infield single and advanced to third on Angelico's second double of the game.
Kyra Bauer pinch ran for Brassell and she and Angelico came around to score on Schoonard-Saborio's single up the middle.
Oklahoma Christian and the Javelinas matched zeros to force extras and in the eighth, the Eagles plated a runner on three hits.
With one swing of the bat, the Blue and Gold tied the game yet again, this time at 4-4 on Chapa's fourth home run of the season. OCU scored two runs in the top of the ninth and again, the Javelinas stormed back to knot it up as Brassell led off the frame with a hit by pitch, Angelico singled and
Lauren Oatman reached on an error.
Rachael Longoria's sacrifice fly brought in a run and Angelico scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the 11
th to take an 8-6 lead and looked to split the series, but the Javelinas were able to rally from behind and begin the inning with Angelico's triple, a walk to Oatman and a double steal that plated a runner and put the tying run into scoring position. After moving over on Schoonard-Saborio's groundout, Oatman scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 8-8 and the winning run came around to score on an error as Kingsville took game two in 11 innings, 9-8.
St. Mary's hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville in a double dip Wednesday and the Javelinas return home to host Lubbock Christian Friday and Saturday.
