KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-13, 2-8 LSC) rode the arms of
Carlie Clark and
Karri Smith to a doubleheader sweep Saturday as the Javelinas knocked off #RV Cameron University (18-9, 3-3 LSC), 3-0, in game one, and 6-3, in game two, Saturday afternoon at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field.
Clark tossed 6.1 shutout innings and struck out nine in the game one victory and Smith followed with a complete game performance in a game two win.
Lauren Oatman concluded the doubleheader 4-for-6 with three runs scored and
Roxy Chapa extended her reached base safely streak to 21 games.
Game OneClark stymied the Cameron offense in an amazing performance in the circle, tallying nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings as Kingsville defeated the Aggies, 3-0. The nine punchouts were the most for the junior right-hander since her shutout victory versus Huston-Tillotson College Feb. 12, 2015. The total was one shy of her career mark (10 strikeouts as a freshman March 25, 2014 in win versus Texas A&M International).
Clark earned the win to improve to 3-3 on the year and
Sarah Gilbert earned her second save of the season after recording two outs. Emily Wasinger was charged with the loss, falling to 8-2 after tossing 6.0 innings of three-run ball.
Oatman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Haley Boyett extended her reached base safely streak to 18 consecutive games.
Texas A&M-Kingsville got things started in the bottom of the first when Boyett, who reached on a walk and advanced to second on an illegal pitch, came around to score on
Victoria Schoonard-Saborio's RBI single.
The leadoff hitter reached again in the second after Oatman singled to right field and the outfielder was plated on
Myrissa Sanchez's RBI groundout.
The Javelinas tacked on an insurance run in the fourth as Clark helped herself out with an RBI double to bring in Oatman, who reached on an infield single.
Game TwoSmith (2-3) struck out three and allowed just six hits in 7.0 innings to pace the Javelinas to a 6-3 victory and a Saturday sweep. In just her second game as a Javelina,
Alexei Gonzalez went 2-for-3 from the seven-hole. Schoonard-Saborio went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double,
Rachael Longoria was 2-for-3 with two RBI at the dish and Oatman went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sonora Zukerman (5-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs – five earned – in 5.0 innings as the Javelinas chased her for 11 hits.
The runs came early on as the pitching settled down after the second for Cameron and after the leadoff inning for the Hogs.
The Aggies struck first with all three of their runs coming in the top of the first. The Javelinas responded quickly, answering back with three runs on four hits in the bottom frame. Schoonard-Saborio doubled to right center field with one out and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, the freshman short stop came around to score TAMUK's first run of the game on a two out, bunt single by Longoria. Oatman singled to right field to bring in Longoria and Smith helped herself with an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
Continuing the trend, Texas A&M-Kingsville took its first lead of the game and never looked back with three more runs in the second on four hits. An infield single by
Myrissa Sanchez began the bottom half of the inning and a two out single by Schoonard-Saborio put runners on first and second for the Javelinas. Chapa and Longoria went back-to-back with an RBI double and RBI single as the Blue and Gold took control of the game. A throwing error on Longoria's base knock allowed the third run of the frame to score.
Smith settled down and put up zero after zero on the scoreboard to pick up her second win of the season after finishing the game with 6.0 scoreless frames.
The series concludes tomorrow with a double dip, set to begin at 1 p.m.
