KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (6-7, 0-2 LSC) fell to Angelo State University (13-4, 2-0 LSC) in its Lone Star Conference opening doubleheader Friday evening at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field, 13-3, in game one, and 9-6 in game two.
Roxy Chapa finished the two games with three hits, three RBI and a home run.
Game OneChapa went 1-for-2 with an RBI and the Javelinas scored three runs in the first, but the Rambelles scored 13 runs on 16 hits to take game one 13-3.
Brandy Marlett (5-2) earned the victory with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Karri Smith (1-2) was charged with the loss after throwing 3.1 innings.
Angelo State scored five runs in the opening top half and the Javelinas responded with three runs to make it a 5-3 ballgame. TAMUK scored on Chapa's RBI single and two wild pitches.
The Rams added a run in the second and third and six in the fourth to take game one, 13-3.
Game TwoChapa followed her game one performance going 2-for-4 with two runs, a home run and two RBI in game two and
Haley Boyett scored two runs but the Javelinas fell to Angelo State, 9-6, in game two.
Kenedy Urbany (6-2) struck out eight in 6.0 innings and was credited with the victory and
Carlie Clark (2-2) punched out four in 5.1 innings.
Boyett also swiped two bags to up her season total to eight.
Texas A&M-Kingsville struck first to take a 1-0 lead after Boyett scored on a wild pitch. ASU put four runs on the scoreboard in the second and added a run in the third to take a 5-1 lead, but the resilient Hogs chipped away at their deficit, scoring two runs in third on
Rachael Longoria's RBI and Clark's sacrifice fly.
Angelo State tacked on a run in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it a 7-3 ballgame and TAMUK put two up on a two-run shot by Chapa in the bottom half of the inning after
Victoria Schoonard-Saborio singled to begin the inning.
The Rambelles and Javelinas each added a run in the sixth as the clubs went into the final inning with Angelo State leading 8-6. The Belles crossed the plate once in the seventh to take game two, 9-6.
The series concludes tomorrow with a double dip beginning at 2 p.m.
