Weathers’ 27, Jones’ Double-Double Spoil Aggies Homecoming

Javelinas defeat Cameron, 77-69

LAWTON, Okla. (Men's Basketball) –
If this was a preview of a quarterfinals matchup at the 2016 Lone Star Conference championship, Javelina fans can rest assure the Hogs will put up one hell of a fight as DJ Weathers scored 27 points and Troy Jones posted his fourth double-double of the season in Texas A&M University-Kingsville's (11-13, 3-10 LSC) 77-69 victory over Cameron University (15-10, 8-5 LSC) Saturday evening at Aggie Gym.

The Aggies, who were in a four-way tie for first place, were hosting the Javelinas in their annual homecoming game and Weathers provided much of the offense for the Hogs in the victory, going 8-16 from the field with 15 points from three-point range. Jones finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Cris Boleware recorded 10 points and five assists.

With the victory, the Javelinas moved into sole possession of seventh place in the LSC standings. Cameron moves into a tie for second place with Angelo State University, Kingsville's regular season finale opponent, Tarleton State University and West Texas A&M University with a week remaining in the regular season.

The Hogs held the Aggies to 31 points in the first half and went into the break with a 35-31 lead. Weathers finished the first with 10 points and Jones pulled down eight boards in the opening 20 minutes. The offense was spectacular at holding onto the ball, turning the ball over just two times while dishing out seven assists.

The Aggies took a one-point lead early in the first and went into the first media timeout with a 7-6 lead. The Javelinas came out of the timeout with an unmatched intensity, scoring eight unanswered points to take a 13-6 lead with 13:28 remaining and extended their lead to double digits with 11:20 left to play in the opening stanza.

Cameron overtook the Texas A&M-Kingsville lead with a triple by Cameron Lee at the 6:40 mark of the second to erase the double digit deficit, but Trey Sumpter responded with a layup to give the Javelinas a one-point lead with 6:21 remaining. After CU tied the game at 57, Sumpter drove to the bucket for two and Jones drained both free throws as the Javelinas took a four-point lead into the final stages of the ballgame.

Jamaal Brantley's layup cut TAMUK's lead to three with 2:51 remaining but the Javelinas all but sealed the victory, going on a 7-0 run, holding the Aggies scoreless from 2:51-00:20. The dagger came from Jamar Goodwin, who hit three free throws to give Kingsville a 10-point cushion with 30 seconds left to play.

The Javelinas host Angelo State next week in the regular season finale on Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Prior to the game, seniors JaMarkus Horace, Jones, Goodwin and Weathers will be honored for their contributions to the Javelina men's basketball program. Jones, Goodwin and Weathers were part of the inaugural class under second-year head coach Johnny Estelle and Horace has provided big minutes off the bench for the Hogs this season after transferring over for his senior campaign.
