Seniors Shine in Near Upset vs. Rams

Teams will meet again at LSC Tourney next week

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Men's Basketball) –
It looks like it will be deja vu all over again as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (11-14, 3-11 LSC) will battle No. 15/22 Angelo State University (21-5, 9-5 LSC) one more time in the coming days to begin the 2016 Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, Texas. In the regular season finale, much like last season, the Javelinas were down by 10 but cut it to three several times late in the game before falling just short, 90-84, Saturday evening at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

Seniors DJ Weathers, Troy Jones and Jamar Goodwin put on a show offensively in their final home game, scoring 19 points, 19 points and 16 points, respectively, while sophomore Will West added 16 of his own. Weathers and Goodwin each hit four triples in the contest as the Javelinas drained 11 from long distance.

Goodwin added nine rebounds, Cris Boleware dished out six assists and Goodwin and West each swiped two passes.

Down 10 with 8:35 remaining, the Hogs cut their deficit to three behind three consecutive triples (two by Goodwin, one by Weathers) at the 5:27 mark.

Minutes later and down by eight, Goodwin connected on another triple and West followed with a free throw to make it a four-point ballgame with 1:51 left to play.

The rally fell just short as the nationally-ranked Rams defeated the Javelinas, 90-84.

In the first half, TAMUK trailed 46-38. Weathers led the Hogs in scoring in the opening frame with nine points.

The LSC Tournament begins Wednesday, March 2 at the Allen Event Center. All games will be streamed live and live stats will also be available.

Director of sports information Kelvin Queliz and assistant director of development-athletics Anthony Giacometti will be on the call for Javelina fans, beginning with the pregame show at 2:15 p.m. as the Hogs, who will be the seven seed, will tip off at 2:30 p.m.
