HARLON HILL REGIONAL NOMINEE
Sophomore
Brandon Jones was named a Super Region 4 Harlon Hill nominee last week after earning the LSC Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year awards. The Houston native tallied 11.5 tackles for loss for 58 yards.
ALL-LSC
The Javelinas dominated the Lone Star Conference postseason accolades, collecting three major awards as
Myles Carr received the J.W. Rollins Award, given to the Offensive Player of the Year, Jones was named the J.V. Sikes (Defensive Player of the Year) and Defensive Lineman of the Year and head coach
Daren Wilkinson was honored as the Coach of the Year.
Carr is just one total touchdown away from tying
Abel Gonzales's (2001) record of 31 total touchdowns in a season. Carr has thrown 29 TDs and rushed for two. He heads into his final collegiate game as the school's all-time leader in completion percentage (61.5) and pass efficiency (154.5) and he is four touchdown passes away from tying the all-time mark set by
Karl Douglas (54).
Joining Jones on the first team were kicker
Julio De la Garza, offensive lineman
Bo Villarreal and
Stuart Sanchez, wide receiver
Anthony Autry, tight end
Stehly Reden, full back
Torrey Thomas and linebacker
Braedon Robinson.
The second team included Carr, linebacker
ZeMarcus Green and defensive backs
Jarrod Sanders and
Devonte Williams.
Aundra Long,
Luis Lopez, Autry (return specialist),
Jordan Thomas,
Alex Kuyinu and
DeMarcus Spurlock received honorable mention and Long also appeared on the All-Academic squad.
TOSS IT UP TO THE BIG FELLA
One of the biggest surprises of 2016 has been the play of transfer
Stehly Reden. A junior tight end that played at BYU and for coach Wilkinson at Colorado State-Pueblo, Reden quickly became a fan favorite with eight of his 22 receptions leading to a score. His eight touchdowns are No. 1 on the squad and tops the single season mark for tight ends in program history.
FIRST TEAM… AGAIN
Anthony Autry capped off his second and final regular season in a Javelina uniform with yet another postseason nod as the Atlanta product appeared on the Lone Star Conference first team for the second consecutive season. Autry led the Javelinas with 42 catches for 686 yards and his seven touchdowns were second most.
KICK EM OFF GUARD
Julio De la Garza has become one of the best kickers in program history and the 5-11 Valley native is just a sophomore. De la Garza has successfully recovered his own onside kick twice in 2016 and earned All-LSC first team honors this year after an honorable mention selection last season.
BJONES IS A BEAST
Brandon Jones has put together one of the best sophomore campaigns in NCAA Division II as the defensive lineman has 11.0 sacks and 14.0 tackles for loss. He was awarded the Lone Star Conference's J.V. Sikes Award, given to the Defensive Player of the Year and was also named Defensive Lineman of the Year and to the first team.
In just two seasons, he has amassed 26.5 TFL and 16.0 sacks.
TEAM OF THE MONTH
Hero Sports chose Texas A&M-Kingsville as the team of the month in Super Region Four and the Javelinas are currently leading the poll as the national team of the month. Voting continues until 1 p.m. CT today. Hero Sports has the Javelinas ranked No. 22 in its national poll and four Hogs have won player of the week in 2016.
