Javelinas Close out Mustangs in Straight Sets

The Hoggies will wrap-up the regular season at home against Cameron University

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Volleyball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (17-5, 7-3 LSC) swept Midwestern State University (12-20, 6-14 LSC) Friday evening at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center to improve their win streak to four matches.

Kingsville has now swept Midwestern State in the season series for three consecutive years and defeated them in six straight sets in 2016.

The Javelinas hit .301 and tallied ten total aces the match led by Taliah Phipps and Casey Klobedans who each had three aces. Klobedans led the offense with 32 assists and recorded two kills and one block. Lexi Wick paced the Hogs with 13.5 points behind11 kills, two aces and 1 block. Madison Brabham followed with ten kills followed by Krystal Faison who finished with nine kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1

The first set was tight at the beginning as both teams exchanged points to 12. The Hogs then went on a 4-0 run to create space and remained on top as they won the set 25-19 after a kill by Alexandria Wells. The hogs hit .458 as a team and recorded five service aces. 

Set 2

The aces continued to roll for the Javs as they took a 4-0 lead, highlighted by three consecutive aces from Klobedans. Bukowski and Brabham each gathered four kills to lead the team and Faison was behind them with three kills. TAMUK took set No. 2, 25-19. 

Set 3

Midwestern State made Texas A&M-Kingsville work in the third stanza, but the Hogs prevailed to complete the sweep. After being tied at 15, the Hogs closed out the set on a 10-7 run to clinch with a score of 25-22. Bukowski and Wick was a mean one-two punch as the both finished with five kills each. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Blue and Gold will have their final home match of the season tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Cameron.
