GAMES 1-3: Women’s Hoops Tips off 2016-17 in #HogNation

Women’s basketball hosts East Central Friday and Tampa Sunday before hitting the road Monday and Wednesday

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – A busy start to the 2016-17 season awaits Texas A&M University-Kingsville as the season opening week consists of four games over a six day period, beginning with the official tipoff Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. versus East Central University. Friday's contest and Sunday's 2 p.m. slate versus the University of Tampa will be in the friendly confines of the Gil. E Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
 
Following Sunday's tilt versus the Spartans, the hardwood Hogs head to San Antonio to battle St. Mary's University Monday at 6 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena and the University of Texas-San Antonio Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

The Coaches
Third year head coach Wade Scott will count on his veteran leadership and key additions as the season quickly approaches.

The Returners
Eight letterwinners return, including four starters; Kaylin Roher (11.8 points, 1.4 steals per game), Meesha Wade (7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds), Tee Moore (6.9 points, 3.6 rebounds), Kaylee Kana (6.1 points, 4.4 rebounds), Joslyn Smith (5.1 points, 5.4 rebounds), Ope Ibrahim (2.4 rebounds, 0.4 blocks), Lily Hospers (2.4 points, 4.6 rebounds) and Reni Alfred (1.3 points, 1.3 rebounds).
 
Division I Transfers
Five NCAA Division I transfers join the Javelinas in 2016-17; Emmeri Archer (Brooklyn, N.Y./Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), Madison Crawford (Ft. Worth, Texas/Cal State Fullerton), Shaq Debose (Houston, Texas/Alcorn State), Jaiton Walls (Round Rock, Texas/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) and Angelica Wilson (San Diego, Calif./Alcorn State). Moore, who averaged 6.9 points last season for the Hogs, transferred from Northwestern State University prior to the 2015-16 campaign.
 
Additions
Local product Victoria Salinas (Corpus Christi, Texas/W.B. Ray HS) and Cara Taliaferro (San Antonio, Texas/Cole HS) are the lone freshmen on this year's squad. Essence Sauls transferred to Hoggie Land after two seasons at St. Edward's University.
 
Duplicating Early Season Success
Last season, the Javelinas began the year 3-0 for the first time since 2007-08 and 5-1 overall.
 
Scouting the Tigers
East Central finished 2015-16 11-17 overall and 10-12 in the Great American Conference. In the GAC Tournament, the Tigers upset the No. 2 seed as a No. 7 seed for the first time in conference history. ECU returns three starters and four of its top scorers in Alexa Adair (12.9 points, 4.0 rebounds), Jalyn Jackson (9.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, 54.6 field goal percentage, GAC honorable mention and all-tournament team), Whitney Stotler (8.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, GAC all-tournament team and Aalyiah Blakley (7.8 points, 5.7 rebounds).
 
Friday marks the first matchup between the Tigers and Javelinas since 2010. Below is the all-time breakdown between the two programs.

Scouting the Spartans
Tampa is tied for eighth in the initial D2SIDA Women's Basketball South Regional poll. The Spartans went 20-13 overall and 9-7 in the Sunshine State Conference last season and appeared in the NCAA South Regionals after winning the 2016 SSC Tournament championship.
 
Despite losing its leading scorer, UT returns Elena de Aldfredo, who averaged 11.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and shot 44.4 percent from three-point range. Karma Jeremie added 6.3 points and 4.7 rebounds.
 
Sunday will be the first matchup between the Javelinas and Spartans.
 
Scouting the Rattlers
St. Mary's hosts the Javelinas in the first of two matchups this season. The Javelinas hold the all-time series lead but the Rattlers won the previous seven contests. StMU went 18-10 last season and 11-7 in the Heartland Conference. Senior Kiara Etheridge returns and was named to the inaugural preseason All-Heartland Conference team.

Scouting the Roadrunners
Wednesday's game at UTSA will be an exhibition for Texas A&M-Kingsville. Last season, the Roadrunners won the matchup. Ope Ibrahim went 3-of-4 from the field for 10 points off the bench. Leading the team with 11 points and four assists was Kaylin Roher and Kaylee Kana added nine points and three rebounds.
