Terrones Throws a Gem, Scott Earns Two Saves in Sunday’s Sweep over No. 25/27 Buffs

Javelinas take three-out-of-four over nationally-ranked Buffs

KINGSVILLE, Texas (Baseball) – Matt Terrones
(2-0) threw a four-hit gem in game one to lead the Javelinas to a 2-1 win and Hayden Vesely's picking skills were put to the test at first base in the 3-2 win in game two as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (9-5, 3-1 LSC) swept Sunday's doubleheader at Nolan Ryan Field from No. 25/27 West Texas A&M University (9-7, 1-3 LSC).

Terrones' 6.0 innings and eight strikeouts were season-highs for the southpaw. Weston Silverberg registered a hold after 2.0 crucial innings in relief to preserve TAMUK's lead with the tying run at second base. Ryan Scott earned two saves on Sunday and three in the series to bring his season total to five.

Zach Smith, Cline Andrews, Vesely, Clint Wallace and Blake Johnson recorded hits in both contests.

Game One
A pitcher's duel in game one was a beauty and left-hander Terrones (2-0) allowed just four hits in a 6.0 inning, eight strikeout performance as Texas A&M-Kingsville took game one, 2-1.

The leadoff hitters reached base in the second and third inning but could not come around to score.

TAMUK struck first in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run on three consecutive hits. Terrones allowed just three hits and struck out six through the first 5.0 innings of the game. He finished with a season-high in strikeouts and innings pitched.

Andrews led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple to right-center field and Vesely plated the third baseman on an opposite field single to give the Hogs a 1-0 lead. Wallace singled to right and a sacrifice bunt/fielder's choice loaded the bases with no outs. However, McAllister buckled down and struck out the next three to get out of the jam allowing just one run, stranding three for the Javelinas.

With the tying run in scoring position in the top of the sixth, Terrones struck out two hitters to preserve TAMUK's 1-0 lead.

Vesely led off the sixth with a walk and a hit and run with Johnson worked to perfection, pitting runners at the corner with one out. Wesley Aguilar's suicide squeeze found a hole as Vesely came around to score and give the Hogs a 2-0 lead.

WT scored its first run of the game in the top of the seventh, but Scott settled down to earn the save.

McAllister (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up just one run and five hits in 5.1 innings, striking out six.

Vesely went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two walks and Andrews added a triple and a run.

"Game one set the tone and the defense really helped me out with great plays," said Terrones. "It is never a one-man thing and it felt great to go out there and execute."

Game Two
WT struck first in the top of the second but doubles by Vesely and Wallace knotted the game at one-all in the bottom frame.

In his first start of the season, Will Abbott went 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out three. In the top of the fifth, Mario Siller made a sensational snag to end the frame and strand WT's leading run at third.

With one out, Smith and Andrews singled on back-to-back plate appearances and an error allowed both runners to move into scoring position with one out and the game tied at one. The second error of the inning proved to be costly as the drop allowed the Hogs to score two and take a 3-1 lead.

The Buffs scored a run on a double and had the tying run on second with no outs in the seventh. Trey Taylor threw 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. Silverberg shut the door in the seventh, leaving the tying run in scoring position as Kingsville entered the bottom of the frame with a 3-2 edge. The right-hander threw a scoreless eighth and Scott registered a save after a perfect ninth.

Earning the win was Tyler (1-0) who came on in relief and Scott picked up his fifth save of the season, second of the afternoon and third of the series. Brooks Trujillo (1-2) was charged with the loss after striking out three and allowing three runs – one earned. Despite picking up the loss, Trujillo kept his ERA under 2.00 on the season after four starts in 2015.

WT went 1-for-12 with runners on in game two. Smith went 2-for-4 with a run and Wallace added two hits, a double and an RBI.

The Javelinas head to the University of Houston-Victoria on Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m.
