Jumping out to a 6-2 lead behind two kills from Faison were the Blue and Gold. An 8-2 scoring burst gave TAMIU the lead for most of the set. Down by five, TAMUK won seven of the next nine points, led by Hutchinson's two kills and a solo block, to tie the score at 23-23. However, the Dustdevils took the next two points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Four straight Javelina kills gave them a 9-4 lead in the second stanza. TAMIU responded with seven straight points to take a two-point advantage. The Blue and Gold managed to tie the score thrice, the last coming at 14-14 after a Dustdevil service error, but the visitors went on to take the set 25-22.
TAMUK went ahead 4-3 following back-to-back attack errors by TAMIU in the third. The Dustdevils answered right back with four consecutive points. Four attack errors from the visitors helped the Blue and Gold go on a 16-4 scoring burst and gave them the lead for the rest of the set.
The Javelinas led for most of the fourth stanza until TAMIU used a 5-1 scoring burst to take a 17-16 lead. TAMUK answered back with three straight to go up by two. Leading 22-19, the Blue and Gold surrendered four straight points to the visitors. The teams traded the next three points until the Dustdevils got back-to-back kills to end the contest.
A tough weekend awaits TAMUK beginning with a 6 p.m. Friday match against Angelo State, the second place team in the Lone Star Conference.
