KINGSVILLE, Texas (Men's Basketball) – A tinker in the Texas A&M University-Kingsville (3-1) lineup by head coach
Johnny Estelle led to another home victory as the Javelinas were able to defeat Ohio Valley University (1-3), 76-66, Sunday evening at the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
With the victory, the Javelinas are now 3-0 at home. The busy Hogs close out a four-game in seven-day schedule 2-2 (Friday's game was an exhibition that does not count towards standings).
A lot of contact saw a combined 23 fouls in the first half, but the Javelinas could not convert from the charity stripe, going 4-of-16 from the free throw line. Despite those woes, the Javelina bench scored 24 points and Kingsville entered the locker room with a 39-28 lead.
A 12-2 run by the Fighting Scots cut OVU's deficit to three, 54-51, with 7:46 remaining as Darryl Walker caught fire with 23 of the Scots' 51 points, and again to three with 4:49 left. Texas A&M-Kingsville scored five unanswered to make it an eight-point ballgame and the Javelinas were able to hit clutch free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory, 76-66.
Pacing the Javelinas with 18 points off the bench was senior
Troy Jones with 18 points.
Cris Boleware dished out seven assists and added nine points and two steals without committing a turnover and
DJ Weathers scored 12 points to go with his five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Jamar Goodwin pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as the Hogs recorded 49 boards, 13 offensive. Defensively, the Javelinas finished with 10 steals and forced 19 turnovers.
Walker finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Fighting Scots and added eight rebounds.
As a team, Texas A&M-Kingsville outscored OVU in the paint, 40-to-24 in the paint and the bench outscored Ohio Valley's second unit, 41-to-16.
The Javelinas hit the road for a four-game road trip beginning with the Tarleton State University Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 27. On Friday, the Hogs take on Ouachita Baptist at 5 p.m. and follow with a 5 p.m. slate on Nov. 28 versus Colorado State-Pueblo.
