KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team won 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 26-24) over Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon in the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. In the match,
Casey Klobedans moved into fifth place on the program's career assist list with her fourth of the day. The sophomore now has 2,233 assists in her career.
The Javelinas improved to 18-10 overall and 7-5 in the Lone Star Conference while the Lions dropped to 14-10 and 6-6 league action.
Offensively, the Blue and Gold received a balance attack with
Ashley Bukowski, Krystal Faison and
Valarie Moehrig all finishing with a team-high seven kills. Klobedans added six kills and
Haley Hutchinson registered five.
Klobedans totaled 26 assists and five blocks. She was one of four players to have multiple service aces in the contest as well. Bukowski tallied a match-high three aces and
Brett Zaccardo, Faison and Klobedans had two apiece.
Defensively, Faison led TAMUK with 13 digs.
Abbey Wells also reached double figures in digs, totaling 12. Hutchinson matched her season best with eight blocks.
Other than seeing the score tied twice, the last being 2-2, the Blue and Gold led the entire first set. They recorded 12 kills, a .250 attack percentage and four aces.
Set two began with a 4-1 run from TAMUK with kills coming from the right hands of Faison and Moehrig. A&M-C responded with four straight points but the Javelinas answered right back with four consecutive points of their own to lead 8-5.
With the score tied 12-12, five of the next six points went in favor of the Blue and Gold to put them back ahead and forced a timeout from the Lions. Klobedans had two kills and Moehrig recorded a kill and solo block during the scoring stretch.
A 3-0 run from A&M-C cut TAMUK's lead to 22-21. After a timeout by the Javelinas, Klobedans and Hutchinson combined for two blocks and Faison registered an ace that gave the Blue and Gold a 2-0 advantage in the match.
With the third stanza tied 2-2, the Javelinas won six of the next nine points to go up by four. The Lions fought back and took the lead at 12-11. TAMUK scored three straight points but the visitors won the next two points to knot the score 14-14.
The Blue and Gold went on a 4-1 scoring burst to take the advantage back. They would maintain their lead until A&M-C scored three straight to tie the score 23-23. After trading a point apiece, Moehrig tallied a kill and Bukowski closed out the contest with another strike.
Up next for TAMUK is a home contest at 7 p.m. against Texas A&M International on Tuesday.
