KINGSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore libero
Brett Zaccardo made history Friday night in the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court, becoming the first Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball player ever to record multiple 500-dig seasons. However, Texas Woman's took the match from the Javelinas in three sets (25-9, 25-21, 25-20).
The Blue and Gold fell to 17-10 and 6-5 in the Lone Star Conference on the year while the Pioneers are now 20-5 and 9-3 in league play.
Ashley Bukowski paced TAMUK with 11 kills and a .258 attack percentage.
Casey Klobedans was credited with a match-high 30 assists to move to within four of fifth place on the school's career list. Zaccardo finished her historic night with 19 digs.
Kills from
Valarie Moehrig and Bukowski gave the Javelinas an early 2-1 lead. TWU answered back with eight consecutive points until a kill by
Madison Brabham. However, the Pioneers stayed on a roll the rest of the set, recording 11 kills and just one error for a .333 attack percentage.
Set two began with back-to-back kills from Bukowski and Moehrig. TWU responded with two straight points to knot the score. TAMUK went back ahead 4-2 after a Pioneer attack error and combined block by
Krystal Faison and Brabham.
The Blue and Gold stretched their lead to 10-7 after two attack errors by the visitors. Almost the rest of the way, TAMUK either held the lead or the score was tied. That was until the Pioneers closed out the set on a 7-1 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
Down 8-3 in the third, a kill courtesy of Faison began a 6-2 scoring burst for the Blue and Gold. However, TWU won nine of the next 13 points to go in front for good. The closest the Javelinas were able to get the rest of the way was three, 22-19, following a Pioneer ball handling error.
TAMUK closes out the home weekend with a 2 p.m. Saturday contest against Texas A&M-Commerce.
