PORTALES, N.M. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team led from beginning to end Wednesday night as the Javelinas downed Eastern New Mexico in Portales 72-56.
The Javelinas (8-11, 3-6) had four players in double figures as they shot 49.1% from the floor. It was their second-best shooting night of the season and their best in Lone Star Conference play this season. Eastern fell to 6-12 overall and 4-5 in the LSC.
Lauren Mahone led the Javelinas with 18 points and eight rebounds, while
Lauren Jay added 14 points.
Ashley Viera returned to the lineup finishing with 12 points while
Rosalie Cutri had 10 points.
Jordyn Cooper led the Zias with 12 points on four, 3-point buckets.
Aside from a solid shooting performance, Kingsville was dominant on defense outscoring ENMU 43-5 off turnovers. The Hoggies swiped a LSC-best 22 steals which was three off the school record of 25 set in 2001. Jay, Cutri and Viera each had four steals, and Mahone had three. Nine of 11 Kingsville players recorded a steal.
The Javelinas return home to face West Texas A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be their first home game since Jan. 22 when they defeated Cameron. West Texas is 9-0 in the LSC this season.
