"Any time you play a team that likes to control the clock and run the ball, you have to execute on all three facets," said interim head coach
Jaime Martinez. "We gave ourselves a couple of chances to score but couldn't finish off quality drives and stop the run, and our hats go off to Eastern New Mexico. They played a great game."
The Greyhounds went 80 yards down the field on their opening drive to take a quick 7-0 lead with 7:50 remaining in the first. Continuing to pound the ball and control the clock, Eastern New Mexico capped off another eight-play drive with E'lon Spight's second rushing touchdown of the quarter. However, the Greyhounds pissed the point after and closed the first quarter with a 13-0 lead.
A great return by the Hounds brought them near midfield, but a miscue on an option pitch was recovered by Oliver to give the Javelina possession 1:34 seconds into the second quarter. The ground onslaught continued for ENMU with its third rushing score of the first half. With 10:12 remaining in the first half,
Alex Rios entered behind center and on the first play of the drive, found
Chaz Adams for an 11-yard pickup.
ENMU added two more touchdowns to enter halftime with a 34-0 lead. Spight's record breaking 19
th rushing touchdown came with 1:52 remaining in the second quarter as the running back is now atop the Greyhound single season rushing touchdown chart. Moses registered eight first half tackles.
The Javelinas pushed the ball in the opening minutes of the second half to enter the red zone for the first time all evening. However, an interception in the end zone led to an ENMU touchdown minutes later as the Greyhounds took a 47-0 lead. Thomas was the recipient of five catches in the third quarter and ended the frame with 97 yards. Pitre capped off a 13-play, 70-yard drive with TAMUK's first touchdown against Eastern New Mexico this season. The rushing touchdown was the sophomore's first of 2014.
