SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Volleyball) – A dominating start featured Texas A&M University-Kingsville (14-8) hit .424 and earn an opening set victory 25-18. The Javelinas carried their momentum to a four-set, season sweep over St. Mary's University (8-11) on Tuesday evening at the Bill Greehey Arena.
The Blue and Gold continued to block at will, finishing with 10.0 team blocks en route to a 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 32-30, win. Led by
Stephanie Johns' six blocks,
Casey Klobedans and
Kelsey Washington each registered three blocks. Washington and freshman
Krystal Faison recorded double-doubles with 15 kills and 18 digs and 11 kills and 22 digs, respectively. Johns added 10 kills,
Ashley Bukowski tied Washington with a team-high 15 kills, Klobedans led all players with 54 assists and
Brett Zaccardo paced the club with 27 digs. Klobedans and Zaccardo each added two service aces.
Down 19-18 in the second set, the Rattlers and Javelinas traded points until SMU took a 24-20 lead. A kill by Klobedans and a block by Washington and Johns cut Kingsville's deficit to 24-22, but St. Mary's tied the match at 1-1 with a kill.
Up 12-10 and determined to take a 2-1 lead, the Hogs posted five unanswered points to give themselves a 17-10 edge. Despite St. Mary's late rally, the Javelinas escaped the third set with a 25-22 win. The Rattlers went on two long runs in the fourth set before TAMUK ended SMU's hopes of forcing a fifth-set, ending the marathon set with kills by Johns and Faison to sweep the two regular season meetings over the Heartland Conference member St. Mary's.
The Javelinas begin a three-game home stand on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. when Tarleton State University enters the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. The Texanns defeated TAMUK, 25-19, 25-22, 29-27, on Sept. 19 in Stephenville.
