STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Football) – Tarleton State University (2-3, 2-2 LSC) gave its homecoming crowd a historic game as the Texans set a school record with 80 points and 11 touchdowns to defeat Texas A&M University-Kingsville (1-5, 0-4 LSC), 80-14, on Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium.
Â
Shawn Vasquez led all Javelina players with 15 carries for 102 yards.
Trey Mitchell finished 6-of-20 and added 72 yards on the ground.
Â
A bright spot on special teams was the leg of
Jonathan Robinson, who was punting in his first collegiate game. The 6-5 freshman from Navarre, Fla. aired 48 yards and 49 yards late in the third frame and averaged 39.9 yards/punt on seven attempts.
Â
Tarleton struck first after back-to-back penalties gave TSU possession of the football inside Kingsville territory. The Texans went 40 yards on eight plays to take a 7-0 lead with 7:01 left in the opening quarter.
Â
A bad snap allowed Tarleton State to begin its third drive of the first frame on the TAMUK-17.
Trevor Pesek stopped a quarterback keeper at the one-yard line and
Henry Greathouse and
Trevor Moses teamed to stuff the TSU rush play to force a field goal with 2:35 remaining in the first.
Â
Kingsville responded with a 39-yard run by Vasquez and after a great block by
Musa Mahmud, the Javelinas entered Texan territory. Mahmud rushed for six yards on the ensuing play and two plays later, Mitchell rushed for nine yards to give the Hogs their second first down of the drive.
Â
Beginning the second quarter on TSU's one-yard line,
Joe Te'o found the end zone for the first time in his Javelina career as TAMUK connected on a fourth-and-one play to cut its deficit to 10-7. On the drive, Kingsville rushed for 80 yards on eight plays.
Â
An intentional grounding call on the Javelinas had potential to be costly as Kingsville was pinned at their own one-yard line, but punter Robinson kicked a 34-yard punt to escape. However, TSU continued to rush the ball at will, as quarterback Collin Strahan rushed for 22 yards on the drive to find the end zone for his second rushing score on the evening and give the Texans a 24-7 edge.
Â
The Texans continued to take full advantage of the great field position, and rushed for their fourth touchdown of the game to take a 31-7 lead with 17 seconds remaining in the first half.
Â
Joe Crowe kicked off the third quarter with a 46-yard return and Mitchell connected with
Jordan Thomas on a fourth-and-one play from the TSU-44 to give the Javelinas a first down. Two plays later, Mitchell ran for 34 yards and his fifth rushing touchdown of the season as Kingsville trailed 31-14 early in the second half.
Â
TSU then took control of the game and added seven second half touchdowns to defeat Texas A&M-Kingsville 80-14 at home for the first time since 2006.
Â
Strahan dominated all evening, accounting for five touchdowns as the Texans netted a season-high 644 total yards.
Â
Lamont Hills and
Mason Stewart led all players with 12 tackles, Pesek and Greathouse added 11 apiece and
Kamen Ruelas added nine.
Â
The Hoggies return to Javelina Stadium for their Kleberg Bank Homecoming Game on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. to host Angelo State University.
