Box Score Kingsville Women End Slide With 60-48 Win
KINGSVILLE, Texas -- A suffocating defense that held the visitors scoreless the final seven minutes and a strong presence on the glass helped propel the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team to a 60-48 victory over Cameron at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court on IBC Bank Pack the House Night.
With the win, the Javelinas picked up their second Lone Star Conference win of the season to move to 2-4 in the league and 7-9 overall. Cameron, which upset Tarleton State in its last outing, drops to 9-7 on the season and 1-5 in the LSC.
Three Javelinas finished in double figures as
Ruby Robertson led the way with 14 points,
Sheana Jones added 13 and
Rosalie Cutri had 12.
Kingsville, which struggled with its shooting hitting 33.8%, won the rebounding war 44-39. Of the Javelinas 44 rebounds, 21 came on the offensive end and led to a 14-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Defensively, the hosts forced 29 turnovers by the Aggies and scored 30 points off the miscues. Kingsville had 14 steals including five by Cutri, who was playing just her second game in a month.
Demmee Rodriguez had three off the bench, while Jones added two.
After rallying from a 10-point deficit with eight minutes left in the first half to pull within 29-28 at the intermission, the second half was tight the entire way. The largest lead in the first 15 minutes of the second half was six points by Cameron following a basket by Christina Caddy for a 48-42 advantage. Caddy led CU with 14 points and nine boards.
The Aggies did not score again as they went scoreless the final 7:16 of the game.
While the Aggies went cold, Kingsville warmed up with an 18-0 run to close the game. Viera had six points in the run, while Robertson and
Lindsey Mahone had five apiece in the run. Robertson converted an old-fashioned 3-point play that gave Kingsville the lead for good with 4:29 left.
Mahone finished the game with a team-best eight rebounds, while Robertson grabbed seven — including five offensive caroms.
The Javelinas hit the road for a 3-game road trip beginning with Midwestern State on Saturday.
