Javelina Women Suffer 9-Point Loss

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Playing in front of over 2000 elementary school students Wednesday morning as part of the "Live the Dream" promotion, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team made a late rally but it wasn't enough to overcome a 16-point deficit as the Javelinas fell 66-57 to Eastern New Mexico on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

With the loss, the Javelinas dropped to 6-8 on the season and sit at 1-3 in the Lone Star Conference. The Zias improve to 2-1 in the LSC and 4-8 overall.

The Javelinas claimed a 31-30 halftime lead after twice leading by seven points in the final three minutes of the first half. Lindsey Mahone and Sheana Jones each had 11 points in the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, Eastern heated up behind the play of Jordyn Cooper. Cooper scored 14 points in the first 10-1/2 minutes of the second half. She had four 3-point baskets with her last making the score 54-40 with 9:33.

Down 58-42 with just under seven minutes remaining, the Javelinas made a charge. After a pair of Ruby Robertson foul shots, Ashley Viera with five straight points to make it a 58-48 game with five minutes left.

Viera's second trey of the half pulled Kingsville to within seven at 60-53 with 3:27 left. Lauren Jay hit a pair of foul shots with 1:58 after grabbing a missed trey by Viera to make it 64-57.

The Javelinas would not score again.

After combining for 22 points in the opening half, Jones and Mahone combined for four in the second half as each finished the game with 13 points. Mahone grabbed 10 defensive rebounds for the second double-double of her Javelina career.

Cooper finished with a game-high 18 points, while Jasmine Johnson netted 12 points. Lakeeyscia Griffin had seven assists to lead all players.

The Javelinas travel to West Texas A&M on Saturday before returning home next Wednesday. The Javelinas will host Cameron as part of IBC Bank Pack the House Night.
