Eastern Jumps Javelinas In Second Half Rally

PORTALES, N.M. – Double figure performances by freshman Ashley Viera and senior Kaitlyn Lowen wasn’t enough as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team fell to Eastern New Mexico 76-60 Thursday evening.

Kingsville (5-18, 3-14) took the lead early in the game, making a 13-6 run in the first seven minutes of the game. Eastern New Mexico (7-18, 6-11) had six turnovers in that time, the Javelinas scoring on each. The Javelinas led at the half, 25-22.

The second half proved better for the Zias as they shot 73 percent from the field compared to 29 percent in the first half. Eastern also hit 6-of-9 threes in the second half, but went 1-for-7 in the first half.

The Javelinas recorded a season high of six blocks, two coming from Kaitlyn Lowen and two from Sheana Jones. Kingsville also recorded only 12 turnovers, its second lowest of the season. The team’s lowest amount came from the game at Cameron at the end of January.

Ashley Viera led the team with 15 points, her 12th double-figure performance in 23 games played. In the seven games she had started, Viera has scored double digits in five of those games. She also recorded four steals and a block.

Lowen followed with 12 points, her 11th double-figure performance of the season. She also had two steals and recorded a career high of two blocks. Jones had nine points in the game, three steals and two blocks.

The Zias scored 54 points in the second half. Four players score double figures to contribute to the win. Jordyn Cooper scored 20 points, followed by Hannah Altheide with 15 and LaKeeyscia Griffin with 13. Tara Johnson earned her first double-double of the season with 12 points scored and 10 rebounds.

Kingsville travels to Canyon, Texas, for a match-up with West Texas A&M Saturday at 4 p.m. The team comes back to Kingsville Hampton Inn Court for its final home game of the season and senior night on Wednesday. They play Angelo State at 6 p.m.
