Javelinas Women Fall To UIW In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team dropped its second game of the week to Lone Star Conference rival Incarnate Word Saturday dropping a 63-47 decision at the McDermott Center.
With the loss the Javelinas drop to 3-14 on the season and are 1-10 in the Lone Star. UIW is now 12-5 on the season and 8-3 in the LSC.
Kaitlyn Lowen led the Javelinas with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Rita Banasczak added nine and Breanna Gonzalez eight. Lowen led the team with three steals and shared the lead in rebounding with Sheana Jones as each pulled down five boards.
While falling behind by six early at 10-4, the Hoggies rallied to the game at 12 with 11:06 left. Lowen scored four points and Banasczak and Gonzalez each added a bucket during the 8-2 run.
After Kingsville missed out on five chances to take the lead with the game knotted at 12 for nearly three minutes, Rose Whitehead broke the tie with five straight points to start a 12-2 spurt. The run was capped by Michelle Holt’s 3-point which gave the hosts a 24-14 lead with 3:06 left in the half.
The Javelinas pulled no closer than seven points the remainder of the half and trailed 30-20 at the intermission.
The Cardinals opened the second half with a lay in by Hale to make it 32-20.
Javelinas answered with a 7-0 run to pull with 32-27 with just under 18 minutes remaining. A 3-point play by Brittany Selby opened the run followed by buckets by Lowen and Banasczak. Kingsville would get no closer the remainder of the game.
Ashlyn Green led the visitors with 20 points, while Rose Whitehead had 13.
The Javelinas remain on the road for a pair of games next week as they head to Cameron on Thursday and Midwestern State on Saturday.
