KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team suffered tough Lone Star Conference loss as it fell to the Eastern New Mexico Zias, 65-58, Thursday morning during the “Live the Dream: You Can Go To College” game.
More than 1,000 elementary school students from the surrounding area were in attendance.
After a back-and-forth clash in the first half, Eastern New Mexico took a 10-point lead in the second half, causing the Javelinas to go scoreless for eight minutes in the second half.
Kingsville made a late run to pull as close as five points, 60-55, with 27 seconds left as Breanna Gonzales hit a pair of free throws. The Hoggies couldn't get closer.
The Javelinas shot 35 percent from the field, but only hit 2-of-14 three pointers.
Eastern New Mexico had 26 turnovers compared to Kingsville’s 17. However, the Zias had 10 steals.
Three Javelinas led the team with double figures, scoring the majority of the points. Ashley Viera scored 14 points followed by Brandi Clark with 12 and Kaitlyn Lowen with 10 points.
Tara Johnson led the Zias with 15 points.
Kingsville will be back on the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court Saturday when they host West Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
