Incarnate Word Sweeps Javs

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team traveled to Incarnate Word for a doubleheader on Tuesday and lost, 8-0 and 2-1 at Cardinal Field.

In the first game, the Javelinas (17-30, 5-19) loaded the bases in the first inning with no one out, but were unable to bring home a run.

The two teams remained tied 0-0 heading into the fourth inning. The Cardinals finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and two runners on base Whitney Waltrip doubled home two runs and then Monica Acuna drove in another run with a single.

The Cardinals run-ruled the Javelinas in the fifth inning. With two outs and no one on base the Hogs committed an error that led to five unearned runs. Waltrip hit a three-run double and then Acuna followed it up with a two-run homer.

Briana Sanchez improved to 15-9 on the season with the shutout victory. She allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six.

In the second game, the Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Javelinas had runners in scoring position in the third, fifth and sixth innings, but could not score.

The Cards added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Javelinas made the game interesting in the seventh inning. The Hoggies loaded the bases with one out and made it a 2-1 game on a fielder’s choice by Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS). Waltrip was able to retire the final batter of the game to pick up the complete game victory. She allowed five hits, no earned runs and four walks while striking out eight.

Lauren Denney (Alvin/Alvin HS) took the loss for the Javelinas despite allowing eight hits and two runs in 6.0 innings. Freshman Taylor Roberson (Seguin/Seguin HS) went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the offense.

The Javelinas close out their season this weekend when they travel to Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State in a three-game series.
