
ABILENE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team exploded for 12 runs on Saturday afternoon in a 12-7 win at Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian in the final game of the three-game series between the two teams.
The Javelinas (13-19, 2-10) fell behind, 5-1 after three innings, but scored 11 times in the fourth and fifth innings to grab the much needed victory. The Wildcats (20-9, 6-5) did not help themselves by committing five errors that led to six unearned runs.
The Javelinas pounded out 11 hits in the game and every player in the starting lineup either scored a run or drove in a run. Kaylee Villanueva (Corpus Christi/Moody HS) led the team going 2-for-5 with a double, run scored and three RBI’s. Amber Cherry (Splendora/Splendora HS) went 2-for-4 and scored three times. Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) and Kodie Garner (Garland/Garland HS) each had two hits and combined to drive in three. Freshman Lex Cordova (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) ignited the seven-run fourth inning with a bases loaded two-run single.
Denise Arnold (Katy/Katy HS) picked up the win in the circle. She tossed 4.1 innings of relief while allowing two runs. Caitlyn Crain was tagged with the loss after allowing four hits and three runs in one inning of relief.
The Wildcats pounded out 12 hits in the game. Sara Vaughn went 3-for-5 with two runs, a home run and an RBI while Brianna Fowlkes went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three runs batted in. Courtney Flanary added three hits, scored a run, drove in one and had a double.
The Javelinas are back in action on Friday at home against Cameron in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The games are sponsored by Blake Fulenwider Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep and it will also be Hubert Family Appreciation Day.
