KINGSVILLE, Texas – In the first Lone Star Conference match up of the season, a pair of junior college transfers and a senior led the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team to defeat Cameron, 61-55, Wednesday night at the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
The Javelinas (4-2) took charge in the first half, outscoring the Aggies (1-4) by 18 points, 37-19. Kingsville outscored the Aggies 15-0 off turnovers in the first half and 19-1 in the game.
The second half started out rough for the Javelinas. Cameron reduced the gap to nine points on an 11-2 run in the first 10 minutes. The Aggies hit over 50 percent of their shots from the field, more than doubling their percentage (23 percent) from the first half.
Kingsville pulled out in the end, scoring 21 points in the final 10 minutes of the game.
In her first LSC game as a Javelina, junior college transfer Rita Banaszczak scored double-digit points (11) in the first half alone. She finished with 13 total points along with fellow newcomer Sheana Jones. Senior Breanna Gonzalez followed with 11 points.
In the LSC preseason poll Kingsville was ranked 9th while Cameron was ranked 8th.
The Javelinas will be back on the court Saturday for another LSC match up against Midwestern State. Game time slated for 1 p.m.
