Lone Star Conference Announces Postseason Awards

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville junior wide receiver Robert Armstrong was named the co-Receiver of the Year in the Lone Star Conference and was one of three All-LSC first-team selections along with senior receiver Sherman Batiste and senior linebacker Jeremy Aguilar. Head coach Bo Atterberry was named the co-Coach of the Year in the league and 22 xJavelinas in all earned recognition.
Armstrong (Cuero/Cuero HS) shared the top receiver honors with Torrence Allen of West Texas A&M and Taylor Gabriel of Abilene Christian. The Javelina junior finished with a league-best 11 touchdown receptions including five in the last two games. He was third in receptions per game (5.2) and fifth in yards per game (67.3). He had 740 yards receiving with 281 in the final two games. It was the second consecutive year he earned first-team honors.
Atterberry joined Armstrong in receiving a special award. He was named Coach of the Year along with his counterparts Bill Maskill at Midwestern State and Don Carthel at West Texas A&M. Atterberry received the honor after leading his team to a fifth-consecutive winning season in his six years as coach. He is the first Javelina to win the honor since 2004. He was named the ACFA Regional Coach of the Year in 2010.
Batiste (Fort Bend/Marshall) played in nine of 11 games missing two full games with an injury and was limited in his last four appearances. In the five games prior to the injury, the senior was amongst the league leaders in receiving yards with 435 while averaging nearly six catches a game. He had 128 yards receiving in the win over Abilene Christian and a team-best 166 yards with two TDs versus Midwestern State. It was his fourth time being all-LSC.
Aguilar (Los Angeles, Calif./Roosevelt HS) was the leader of the Javelina defense recording 88 tackles in 10 games. He finished with 48 solo tackles and had a team-best 12.5 tackles for a loss. He had double-digit stops three times with 14 against Midwestern State, 12 at Valdosta State and 10 at Tarleton. He forced three fumbles and intercepted a air of passes.
Six players were named to the All-LSC second team. Anthony Johnson (Orlando, Fla./West Orange) the team’s top rusher with 622 yards was the lone offensive player named to the second team.
Defensively, three members of the line were chosen Defensive tackles Zane Brown (Fort Bend) and Darnell Hicks (Detroit, Mich./Pershing HS) were selected along with senior Marquis Singleton (Decatur, Ill./Harmony Community HS). Brown led the line with 40 tackles and had a team-best four sacks. Hicks was tied for second on the Javelinas in tackles for a loss with seven including 2.5. Singleton had 38 tackles but missed a game and a portion two others with an injury. He tied for second on the team in tackles-for-a-loss with seven with three sacks.
Steve Harris (Dallas) was a second-team safety and Angel Millan (Edinburg/Economedes HS) the second team punter. Harris was third on the team with 61 tackles. He led the way with four interceptions and nine pass defended. Millan tied a school record with an 87-yard punt at Tarleton and. Averaged 40.9 yards with 16 downed inside the 20.
Fourteen players received honorable mention honors. Three offensive linemen – senior Lee Mattingly (Halletsville/Lincoln-Way Central), senior tackle Chris Hudgins (Van Vleck/Van Vleck HS) and junior Tommy Parsons (Canyon Lake, Smithson Valley HS). Junior Jake Willingham (Van Alstyne/Van Alstyne HS) was a honorable mention selection at tight end. Senior defensive tackle  Bobbie Hampton  (Oklahoma City, Okla./Putnam City North HS) and  uniors Ricky Marshall (Tyler/Tyler HS) , Trevor Pesek (Inez/Industrial) and sophomore T.J. McCullough (Reddick, Fla./North Mason HS) were chosen to the honorable mention team on defense.
Two senior return specialists, a placekicker and a deep snapper round out the TAMUK selections. Jonathan Woodson (Missouri City/Marshall HS) and Joseph Vela (Harlingen/Rio Hondo) were recognized as was Matt Stoll (College Station/A&M Consolidated). Derek Tesch was honorable mention at deep snapper.
