KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville players Jonathan Woodson and Mark Savere received Player of the Week honors from the Lone Star Conference for their play in Saturday night’s 35-23 win over Tarleton State.
Woodson was named the Special Teams Player of the Week, while Savere shared LSC Defensive Player of the Week with Ethan Westbrooks of West Texas A&M. The duo joins Marquis Singleton and Matt Stoll who were honored by the league office earlier this season for their play at Abilene Christian.
Woodson put the proverbial nail in the coffin on Saturday as he returned a kickoff 93 yards for a score for a 35-21 lead. The score came just moments after the Texans pulled to within a touchdown. For the senior returner it was his first kick return for a school as a collegiate player. He now has 2,115 career kickoff return yards which is a school record, plus he broke the 5,000-yard barrier in all-purpose yards becoming the fourth Javelina to do so. Woodson, who finished with 134 all-purpose yards, carried the ball in from 26 yards out with 14 seconds left in the first quarter.
Savere intercepted a pair of first half passes from his linebacker position. The freshman from Warren High School in San Antonio added six tackles – three solo and three assists. Savere also added a quarterback hurry. The sophomore is tied for the team lead in interceptions with two and is tied for fifth on the team in tackles.
The Javelina football team returns to action Saturday when it hosts Angelo State at 7 p.m. in the Kleberg Bank Homecoming Game sponsored by Cricket Communications.
