
CANYON, TEXAS – West Texas A&M scored the first 19 points of the game against visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday and cruised to a 69-40 win in Lone Star Conference men’s basketball action.
The Buffs (13-6, 7-5) controlled play throughout and never let the Javelinas (8-12, 3-8) draw closer than 18 points in the second half. The Javelinas missed their first 11 shots of the game and committed nine turnovers before finally scoring with 5:56 left in the first half.
The Javelinas shot 30.2 percent from the field, made 5-of-16 three-point attempts and were 9-for-12 at the foul line. Derryl Nash (Austin/Elgin HS) led the team with 18 points off the bench. Ryan Layssard (Opelousas, LA/Opelousas HS) added seven points, four assists and four steals.
The Buffs shot 57.8 percent from the field, made 3-of-8 three-point attempts and were 14-for-19 at the charity stripe. Donald Sims led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds. Tez Dumars and Courtney Carr each scored 10 points apiece. David Henderson dished out eight assists.
The Buffalos outrebounded the Javelinas, 35-19 and dished out 23 assists on their 26 field goals.
The Javelinas are back in action on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Tarleton State.
