KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team ended a two match skid with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 win over Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M University-Commerce on Saturday afternoon at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. (box score)

The Javelinas (5-6, 3-6) were never seriously threatened in the first two sets, but in the third set they had to finish strong to get the sweep. The Lions (2-8, 1-7) tied the score at 18-18 after a kill by Rachel Robertson, but the Hoggies followed it up by scoring seven of the final 10 points of the match.

The Javelinas posted a .240 attack percentage as a team and had five different players with at least a .300 attack percentage. Kelsey Washington (Cuero/Cuero HS) led the way with 11 kills and a .308 attack while Bethany Friesenhahn (Poth/Poth HS) had her best attacking match of the season with eight kills, seven digs and a .333 attack. Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) directed the attack with 21 assists.

The Javelina defense was formidable behind the efforts of Laura Macek (Wilson, KS/Ellsworth HS) and Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS). Macek recorded 11 blocks in the match to set a school record for most blocks in a three set match. Insell led the team with 21 digs.

The Lions only had five fewer kills than the Javelinas, but committed 14 more attack errors. Breanne Snyder led the team with nine kills while Jordan Neal led all players with 29 assists. Dakota Crockett led the team with 16 digs.

The Javelinas are back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Huston-Tillotson.
