UCO Tops Hoggies

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead versus Central Oklahoma on Sunday, but could not hold onto the lead and lost 4-2 at the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament at Texas Bank Sports Complex.  (box score)

The Javelinas (22-19) got on the board in the first inning. Kaycee Bryan (Splendora/Splendora HS) hit a one-out solo home run to get things started. A pair of hit batsmen put runners on first and second with two outs and Taylor Munguia (Houston/Cy-Ridge HS) came through with a run-scoring double.

The Bronchos (19-15) took the lead in the top of the second inning. They loaded the bases with two outs when Hannah Justus walked to force in a run and then Kaycee Raines drove in two with a single. Raines drove in another run in the fourth inning to give UCO a 4-2 lead.

The Javelinas put runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth innings, but could not score. In the seventh, Amber Cherry (Splendora/Splendora HS) and Rose Stubbs (Garland/Garland HS) each walked to start the inning, but Rachael Steverson was able to retire the next three batters to close out the game and pick up a save.

Amanda McClelland pitched the first six innings for the Bronchos allowing six hits, two runs and one walk while striking out five to get the win. Megan Whitmire led the team with three hits.

The Javelinas managed six hits in the game. Bryan and Ali Bodnar (Las Vegas, NV/Green Valley HS) each had two hits for the team. Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) was handed with the loss while tossing a complete game.

The Javelinas are back in action on Friday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at home against LSC South rival West Texas A&M.
