Pioneers Top Javs

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team dropped a 7-1 decision to visiting Lone Star Conference South Division rival Texas Woman’s University on Thursday night at Hubert Field. (box score)

Tori Gomez broke open a 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out, two-run homer for the Pioneers (26-22, 8-8). They added another run in the fifth inning when Addison Staley tripled and scored on Bailey Vrazel’s single.

The Javelinas (23-27, 4-12) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Janay Gonzalez (Alice/Alice HS) walked to lead-off the inning and then scored on Rose Stubbs’ (Garland/Garland HS) triple. Unfortunately, the team was unable to put another run on the board in the inning.

The Pioneers put the game away with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

The Javelinas had seven hits in the game, but left 10 runners on base. Stubbs, Yvette Berlanga (San Antonio/O’Connor HS) and Amber Cherry (Splendora/Splendora HS) each had two hits in the game. Amanda Arriaga (Kingsville/H.M. King HS) allowed five runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.

Kaylee Davis pitched a complete game for the Pioneers. She allowed seven hits, one run and three walks while striking out seven. Staley went 3-for-3 at the plate while Vrazel was 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run and four stolen bases. Tiffany Weise went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI’s.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 11 a.m. Gonzalez, Cassandra Hernandez (Harlingen/Harlingen South HS) and Jen Hall (North Pole, AK/North Pole HS) will be honored on Senior Day in between the two games.
