Javs Lose Pitching Duel

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Two of the top starting pitchers in the Lone Star Conference hooked up on Friday night at Incarnate Word’s Sullivan Field and neither Tim Jones (Lake Jackson/Brazoswood HS) nor Kirk Jewasko failed to live up to their pre-game billing. The Cardinals (25-12, 18-8) topped Texas A&M-Kingsville 3-1 in a nine-inning game. (box score)

The Javelinas (19-18, 15-13) and Cardinals could not put a number on the scoreboard until the seventh inning as Jones and Jewasko traded zeros. In the top of the seventh, the Hoggies scored an unearned run after A.J. Hecker (Orange/Bridge City HS) singled and went to second on an error and then scored on a single by Adam Aspaas (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills HS).

The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Jones retired the first two batters and then struck out Leroy Urbina who reached first base on a wild pitch. The next batter was hit by a pitch and then John Zule tied the game with a single.

In the eighth inning, the first two batters reached base for the Cards via a single and an error. After two outs were recorded, Ryan Flowers doubled in two runs to win the game.

Jewasko improved to 9-1 on the season after allowing four hits, one run and three walks while striking out nine in 8.0 innings. Elroy Urbina pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his 10th save of the season.

Jones fell to 6-3 despite pitching a complete game allowing nine hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out three. Ryan Cook (Houston/Mayde Creek HS) stole three bases for the Hogs.

The teams are back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
